I've got a '94 F250 ex. cab 4x4. The truck has power locks but can only be opened with a key on the drivers side. The passenger side key access does not unlock/luck the doors. It has been this way for several years (I've owned the truck for four years) and am embarrassed to admit that I've just dealt with it but figured I wanted to explore fixing it myself. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Is this fixable by someone with moderate/average mechanical skills? How do I access the locking mechanism and what should I look for?
you can get to them by taking the door panel off ( watch for hidden screws they can be a bear) look for any broken conectors for the lock rods. does the power lock button do anything to the lock?? any sound or action?
Thanks for your response. "Yes"....the power locks work fine both on the drivers side and the passenger's side. Both locking mechanisms work...it is just the key access on the passenger side door doesn't unlock or lock the doors.
Does the key turn but not unlock the lock, or is it "stuck"? If it turns but does not unlock, then there is probably a lever which has come loose. If the key will not turn, it could be a bad actuator (yes, sometimes they will work electrically, but not mechanically because the nylon thrust bearing in them wears out), or, someone could have changed the lock on that side.
I assume that when you unlock the driver door, you only unlock it, and that it does not unlock the passenger door also. In other words, there is no electrical activation from using the key.
Your assumptions are correct.....I can insert the key and turn the lock (it is not stuck) but it does not unlock the door. Also, when I use the key on the driver's side it will only unlock the drivers side. I then have to use the power locks to open the passenger side door.
I'll have to pull the panel off this weekend when I get some time and see if there is anything obvious to me. Thanks.
Before you pull the panel...
Take the lock out of the door and check to see if the little nylon tab has the lever in it. It is a 5 minute job. Open the door, put the key in the lock for convenience, then with at flat screwdriver, pull the galvanized metal tab that holds the lock in the door. It will release the lock. Then gently pull the lock out using the inserted key. The lever should be attached. To re-install, just put the lever in the nylon tab and gently put the lock back in the door.
My Bronco does the exact same thing. I always thought it was part of the security system(alarm and such). I've just gotten used to walking up to the passenger side door and using the key fob.

the reason i said to pull the panel off is because when i had to get a key made for my door lock it was cold and i dropped the rod down in the door (cold fingers will do that for ya) and it was only a five minute thing for the door panel. so that is my reasoning.
