ok i have decided the next time i chang my oil im gonna use a K&N oil filter but some people say stay a way from penzoil. i used it in my old van (95 plymouth voyager 3.0L 127000) it worked fine
excpt for a little valve chatter( add 1/2 quart extra and it went away). so what are your thoughts on the best over all oil for a 96 ranger 3.0L 5speed? i live in michigan ware some times you use the air and heat in the same day.if that helps for temp range
On all my vehicles in the future I'm gonna use Castrol GTX, and that's what I currently use in the BII as well. I don't even use the high mileage stuff, just regular Castrol GTX, but a thicker viscocity (20W50) since the engine has a buttload of miles. In a newer vehicle, I'd still use GTX 10W30 though.
I use Mystik JT-8 Super Heavy Duty in my truck. It seems to have pretty good specs, check here. The diesel rating means it also keeps carbon in suspension, which will keep your rings happy and your engine clean. I have seen it at sale at the local farm and fleet for $0.89 / quart, but I havent seen that price in a while, it's up to $1.60 now.
I have switched both my vehicles over to Chevron Havoline 5w30. This is the new stuff and says 'Chevron/Texaco' on the back label, not to be confused with older 'equilon' stock. It has the best cold cranking specs of any dino I've seen specs sheets for. Pennzoil and Castrol are both very good dinos as well. I like 5w30 year round with 3,000 to 4,000 mile drain intervals, this should give you the range of temp. protection you described.
I Use Chevron Delo 400 15W-40 in all my vehicales. I like the extra addtives and the 11.? base number. I also use it in every engine I own Big or small I've had nothing but good luck with it.
I live in the central coast CA. The averge temp in winter in the morning is about 30-40.
just use good old valvoline. Max life is good for an older engine, for the seals. pennsoil and quaker state are crap oils, they have a high ash content that cause it to become waxy and build up in the motor. valvoline has been the best for me.

"Its not just for diesels anymore". API SL rated in addition to the diesel ratings. Just do it.
