Hi. I have a 58 F100 panel with the original six and three on the tree and want to swap the trans with a Borg Warner T86E-IN 3speed overdrive. It will bolt up to the bell housing ok, but not sure of other problems I may encounter. I was also curious if I need to support the new trans? There is a plate on the trans for a mount (it is a foot or more longer than the original) but no frame crossmsmber to bolt it up to. Will it be a bad idea to fabricate a mount because of frame flex?? Or should I let it hang as the original did? Any thoughts welcome.
Russ,
My 59 originally came with a 223 3spd OD. The OD was long gone when I got it. I can see no evidence of it ever having a rear crossmember. I don't think you would need one.
What size input shaft does your T86 have? Also, what number is cast in the OD case? R10? R11
Just curious,
Adios,
Brett
bhabben, Not sure what the input shaft size is bit it is smaller in diameter than the original 3 speed I removed. The OD is stamped R10 F1B. My guess is that it was donated from a car not a truck. I am doing my first full frame off restoration with this one so I have lots of time to figure things out. It will be mostly stock with few mods like front disc brakes, the OD trans and a more comfortable modern seat and seat belts. I'm building it for a driver first, show second.
Thanks bigwin, It didn't seem to need it from my standpoint, but I thought I may as well put it out there for the experts to put there two cents worth in. Pictures are always good for reference if ya gott'em.
hi,
i,ve got a 1960 f100 with a t86e, the trans is bolt on the bell housing. ther's no problem.
i've got a question about you're t86e, do you know where i can find a cluster gear for mine?
thanks
jef
Transmission Exchange Company ( http://www.txchange.com
) sells cluster gears. I recently inquired about parts for the T86 and they do have them. The custor gear was $144. A rebuilt OD transmission was $816 + $200 core. It wasn't stated in the e-mail reply I received from them, but I assume that for the trans only. Not trans + OD.
