Electric fan conversion

Who has done an electric fan on there truck. I have the 390.
I remember when I had a foxbody everyone went to the j-yard and took the dual fan assembly off a V6 ford contour and it fit overy the radiator very well.
Anything like that you guys are doing with these trucks?

Yup!

There are a few guys that did the fan conversion from various ford cars/vans. I went a different route than most and tied mine onto the EFI to control on/off at the temps I wanted. AFAIK, there is a nifty Volvo fan relay and temp sensor switches to do the same thing.

My '78 300 i6 with VEMS EFI:

For Bumps an dDents, the typical donors include the twin fanned Taurus/Contour fan and the monstrous two-speed Lincoln Mark VIII fan.

My setup is Mark VIII, custom brackets, Volvo relay, all controlled by an Edelbrock E-Street EFI.

The Edelbrock ECU provides two low-voltage ground signals at customizable temperatures for each fan speed (or individual fans). Based on the Volvo relay schematic, only one relay is engaged at any one time (high or low speed) which explains why it only has one power feed.

I merged the Volvo relay harness with the Lincoln Mark VIII plug, fabbed up some weather pack connectors for the fan signal wires, and fabbed up an aluminum bracket. I adjusted the low fan speed to come on at 195° and high speed at 210°.

Mocked up with custom brackets:

Was the Volvo setup a junkyard item?

Yes.... just the relays, relay plugs, and as much of the wiring from them I could grab.... better too long that too short!

They usually hide under the core support near the right headlight.

Awesome thanks, Thats a clean looking install. I assume I will need some sort of controller also? Correct?

Yes, either two temp switches and relays or some sort of solid state controller.

My rig is equipped with Edelbrock's E-Street EFI and it can control two fans or a single two-speed fan at whatever temperature is selected through the software in the tablet.

An option is a PWM controller made by Hayden. I'd hit up Hollister Road for more info on what is available.... including a section of radiator tube with two bungs for temp sensors.

I looked up the Hayden PWM controller. It looks like a great option. I have a question though, it appears that it controls the speed of the fan so this is not exactly a 2 speed controller but a variable speed controller? Am I correct in that? If so that looks like thats the one to use.

Yes... fan speed would be dependent on coolant temp.
