My understanding is that the crunchy part of the frame is there to absorb energy and delay the arrival of your head at the steering wheel before the airbag deploys and without it your face will be right there when it blows and that would make a bad day worse. I have 1/4" steel C-channel (winch mount) bolted to my accordions, and my airbag is disabled due to the above reason.

But yeah, if mine were damaged I'd cut them off and put box steel like you said. Or better yet... C-channel like the rest of the frame.

OP, my understanding is that it takes a pretty good hit to bash that accordion crap in. Might want to take a look at the rest of your frame as well.

IMHO, if the frame is damaged at all, and the sheet metal on the truck is good, I'd swap it over.

we never heat the frame to pull. just hook it up to a frame machine and pull it straight. when you heat it it weakens the steel.

like i said, a frame machine will pull it back to where it should be. we have repaired thousands of crumple zones over the past 25 years at the body shop.

Yes they do. Garbage. Lol.

How to fix it... well you just need to apply enough force to uncrush it, that's all. How you do that is up to you.
