I need to replace the passenger side mirror on my 1996 Explorer. I have the new mirror assembly, but no instructions on how to replace it. Do I need to take the interior door panel off (is the mirror assembly bolted on from the inside), or can I pop the mirror assembly off from the outside, and thread the cable through. I guess I'm looking for the best / easiest way to do this. Thanks for any help / guidence you can give me.
1. Remove the door trim panel, door speaker and peel back the water shield if necessary to gain access to the mirror wiring connector and mirror attaching nuts.
2. Disconnect the wiring connector.
3. Remove the three nuts attaching the mirror to the door.
4. Pull mirror away from the door while guiding the wiring out of the door.
Installation
1. Guide the wiring through the door.
2. Install the nuts attaching the mirror to the door. Tighten nuts to 6-8 N-m (53-71 lb-in).
3. Connect the wiring connector. Install the water shield using vinyl tape as required. Install the door speaker and install the door trim panel.
Thanks for the info. It took me about an hour to complete the whole job. I was hoping I wouldn't have to take the whole door panel off, but it was really much eaiser (for a novice like me) than I expected. Thanks again!
