I got a 1996 Bronco with a 351W. Everytime I take off from a stand still the rear axle clunks, sometimes really loud, sometimes not. It sounds like the gears are slamming together (but thats my diagnosis). The guy I bought it from (he only knew how to put gas in it and drive it) said he had the axle replaced under warranty, so that has me concerned. Any ideas as to what that clunk could be?
It would be hard to say what your exact problem is just from your description, I would recomend jacking it up on good jack stands, get under it and check your your u-joints, springs, hangers, bolts ect. look for anything obvious, you could also change the oil in the rear end and look for any metal shavings, and if your's has the rear cover look closely at the gears for nicks , chips, broken teeth. Hope this helps DW
Don't forget to check the slip joint in the rear driveshaft. It is very prone to making clunking sounds on take-off. If you can't narrow it down to anything a good thing to do would be to take the rear end of the shaft off the pinion flange and disconnect the boot at the joint and re-grease it.

That's what was wrong with mine. The grease lasted about 6 months, I just had to do it again. Problem solved for me.
Check the pinion yoke nut as well. For some reason the 8.8 Ford axles have this bad habit of the pinion yoke nut working loose. Have heard more than just a couple of complaints about it. Heck, mine started doing the "clunk" about a week ago... tightened the nut and all is well.
Greystreak, I have a stupid question. Where is the pinion yoke nut ? Mine is an 89 and I may check it when I replace my u-joints in my shaft in the next few weeks with my Spicer joints.
The nut holds the yoke or, in the case of my 92, the flange that the rear U-joint yoke bolts to (four, twelve point, 13mm's). It holds the yoke or flange to the pinion shaft at the front of the diff. I don't recall what size it is but its a biggun'. The torque spec. is 160 ft/lbs. but since the spec. is based on preload when installing a new bearing the Haynes manual adds the disclaimer that it should be done only when replacing the pinion bearing(s). Kind of silly to go and replace bearings and seals that don't need it just to tighten a loose nut but thats what is listed.
