So I've owned my 84 F350 for little over a year now. She runs good and the 460 in it seems fine for now. But I really miss having some real power... My previous DD was a trailblazer ss with a few light mods. The LS2 in those go about 400hp/400 torque and that thing could really get up and go with a pretty mean growl. I wish i could just buy a second vehicle that was more conducive to going fast but that's just not happening right now. I have had some convos with the wife about getting a new motor or having the 460 rebuilt and also rebuilding the transmission. With the goal of being able to confidently drive her on longer trips and really utilizing the space. Obviously if I'm going to do that, I'd like to see what I can get out of her power wise.
1. Out of curiosity, what are these 460's rated at HP/Torque wise?
2. Not that I want to run 13's in this thing... but with the weight of this girl what kind of HP and Torque would it take to get her moving enough to have feel like I'm having some fun behind the wheel? Would 500hp and 500 torque do the job?
3. What should I expect start to finish for a 500hp/500 torque rebuild and install?
Go over to 460Ford and read up. The 460 will respond well to mods, but to get LS type of performance, you'll spend a small fortune to move a heavy truck quickly...then youll still only get 10mpg!(or worse). My '04 2500HD with a 6.0/4L80E would out pull ANY of my 460 powered trucks and still knock down double digit MPGs.
If youre looking for HP AND MPGs, youre not gonna be happy with the 460 compared to your tralblazer. But for work, they are a great engine, just not an LS.
You have to remember what you are driving, a truck. It's heavy, and the 460 is a truck engine, lots of torque down in the lower rpms with a heavy flywheel . The 460 will not shine till you put a heavy load behind it.
If you want something that will set your eyeballs back in your head, ideally it would be in a lighter vehicle and a engine more willing to gain rpms than a 460. You can do some minor things to the engine and gain a little more power, but to radically change the personality of a 460 means it's not as good for hauling and doing "truck" things with it anymore.
It's hard to have the best of both worlds in one engine. As good as the LS2 engine was, your 460 would pull a large camper a lot better than it would.
