Hello, I have a 15 F250 gas 2wd that I use to pull a 8.5x20 enclosed with a 5ft Vnose on the front. I have been using the factory hitch, but my loaded trailer is over the 6,000lb rating. I'm guessing I'm close to 9000 lbs. I have never used a distribution hitch, can someone give me some pointers and guidelines? I have looked at a bunch online, but I have found that some of the arms will not work with my more limited space on the tongue. Any ideas? I don't recall what I measured on the tongue for clearance, but I know the really long arms will not work unless I'm missing something.
Well, my internet stalled and my post was lost.
You could check with an RV dealership or service center. They all sell a variety of hitches for campers, they could surely find one that would fit your needs.
I can say with our campers I won't tow without one. The camper we have now when we were installing the hitch at the dealership I watched the dealer mechanic let the camper down onto the hitch to see how bad it dropped our expedition. About the time the rear tires touched the top of the wheel well he quit lowering the camper. With the hitch properly adjusted it only dropped the back of the expedition about 3 to 4 inches. Our previous camper we pulled without a hitch for a year, then I got an equalizer distributing hitch at an auction. The difference with the hitch was surprising The trailer was more stabile. It didn't bounce as bad, the vehicle was leveled out, and it was a lot easier to handle. You wont be disappointed if you find one that will work for your trailer. Our new one is well worth the money!
