Just wanted to say hey and let you guys know I am glad I found you! I only wish it had been sooner!(lol) I would of been saved the headache of buying the 91 xcab F150 I have now!!! It is, as I have been reading, going to be my worst nightmare! It has a 302, an E4OD, and 355 gears! I bought the truck thinking it would be a good replacement for my 83 Bronco? I was looking for a truck with room for the family and something I could pull my car to the track with. I got one of the two right it has a pretty comfortable interior!!!!(lol) I have been looking into the upgrades that have been in many heated discussions here and I am thinking I am in over my pocket! Well I am looking forward to getting to know you guys here and keeping up with my and everyones progress!
Don't know if you are towing a few miles or hundreds, nor if flat or mountains. Off hand, the only potential problem I see is that the 302 is a bit light for a lot of heavy towing, but should do OK. Power adders are pretty abundant for the 302, but I am not familiar, so I'll let others speak to that. I would get a fresh load of ATF in the tranny and maintain frequent (25,000 mile) fluid changes (unless it gets bad looking sooner). Also, recommend a shift kit for the auto tranny to firm up the shifts for longer tranny life. E4OD,like many auto trannys has soft shifts to make smooth ride, but this is acheived by overlapping gears during the shift, which creats slippage and heat. Checkout www.bankspower.coom for their Transcommand module. Other, significantly cheaper shift kits may be available too. Also, get a tach so you know where you are in the power band. Not sure, but suspect peak torque probably in high 2000s to 3000 rpm. May want to lock out OD for towing.
INLINE SIX POWER!
300 Cubic Inches of Low RPM Truck Torque! And twin-I-beams too!
Oh yeah. I'm not implying the E4OD is a crummy tranny. From what I hear it is a very good, heavy duty tranny. I'm just advocating good tranny care, which is applicable to any auto tranny.
Thanks for the warm welcome! I am not going to be towing too far on a regular basis. The track in which i race my car is about an hour or so from my house! My father has a 91 F150 4x4 with the I6 4.9 and it has more ***** to tow than my 302 does! I think you are probably being kind not calling the E4OD a hunk but, I now have it and need to make the best of it!(lol) Don't take me wrong I am a TRUE FORD truck man but, as in every line of truck sometimes you just have to scratch your head and wonder! I have owned about 5 Ford trucks in my life and I would rate this one the worst by far! I guess I am used to the I6 and it is a totally different animal! Thanks for the replies and hope to talk to you guy alot on here!
I have the 300 I6 and, yes, it is supposed to be much better for towing than the 302. The 302, though a bit small, is a Great engine. Perhaps I am wrong, but I thought the E4OD was the biggest auto tranny, basically an electonic C6 with OD added. Anyway, the thing has performed well in my '90 E350 motorhome for the 6000 miles I have had it (purchased with 52000 miles on it). I think, though, they have several grades of E4OD and the motorhome would have a heavier duty version.
