My 95 lost a head gasket, I posted that a while ago.
I'm going to rebuild it and I would like to turn it up a little or last least get some more torque out of it because the truck is so high geared.
I'm going to flat top pistons,
It doesn't have a mass air flow sensor, I'll have to add one to use any up grades, are there any recommendations for kits to do that?
I would like to change the cam, is there a good towing or rv cam for these motors?
And I'm thinking about duel exhaust, to delete the y-pipe. I have a set of shorty headers with a port for the o2 sensor already.
How high is it geared? The single best thing you could do for this truck is change those gears to something more appropriate.. 3.73-4.10 assuming stock sized tires. There is no getting big torque out of the 5.0 without forced induction, and the stock cam is about as good as it gets for lowend power without a blower. Add 1.7 rockers and longtube headers with a single 2.5" exhaust or dual 2.25" for maximum torque gains, it will still struggle if the truck has 3.08 gears though.
It has 3.55 with the five speed, I don't want to go to lower the gears to kill my fuel mileage. with it only being used for farm stuff, I can sill easily rack up 100 miles a day
I have stock tires, on the road they are fine, but doing farm work a little more torque would be nice. What about the mass air sensor upgrade? Do you have any experience with that?
Yes, a MAF conversion itself won't make any difference but it better adapts to other hardware engine upgrades that increase airflow through the engine.
use 4lo and unlock the hubs to get extra grunt. headers and good flowing exhaust will help motor side. the 5 speed also doesnt have the best low end gearing but is nice on the hwy.
I was asking what brand of mass air flow add on, you might have any experience with.
I've also thought about going to a junk yard and pulling the engine harness, intake and computer off a truck, but I don't know if the cab harness will mate up.
As for using low to start out I've done that, but if you in the mud it would be nice to have the torque to start out in normal 4x4 to get wheel speed, in stead of starting out in a higher gear in low range and trying to shift.
When I use this truck in the summer I have to lock the hubs in and use 4x4 at least once a day. We made it work for that last 20 years, but while it's apart if I can make it better I'd like to.
I had a Ford MAF coversion kit which was designed to be a simple add-on and was easy to install but expensive and unfortunately is no longer manufactured. The junkyard route is the cheapest but it won't be totally plug and play either since some of the extra wires you need for the MAF meter and sequential injection don't exist in the chassis harness on your truck so you will have to open up the PCM connector and add wires and pins there as well.
you might keep an eye out for a ZF 5 speed trans. its setup similar to the old school 4 speeds so for instance you get a granny low first gear, benefit also being the obvious 5 speed for hwy travel. since you already have a manual in the truck the swap would be strait forward.
Sounds like I would need a good diagram to add my own. this is the only kit I have found, F-Series Mass Air Conversion Kit | Dunne-Rite Performance, Inc.
I've been thinking about the zf5 too, but I have only a couple years on the rebuilt trans that is in the truck already.
That is pretty much exactly the same as the Ford kit, it might take you an hour to install it and the only extra thing you would need is a new gasket for the upper intake which has to come off to install the injector wires.
if that m5od is rebuilt you could easily sell it and probably come out well for a zf
But that would ruin the fun of playing with the motor,
I think the small block zf is still has the internal slave right? If I could get away from those crappy things I would do the swap
