Def Failure

My instrumentation warning screen is showing: "In 87 miles speed limited to 50 MPH. Exhaust fluid empty."

I went to fill my Def Tank and it is full from the last time. Anyone know what's causing this???

Hope your dealer is less than 87 miles away.
The computer hasn't seen a difference in def level, over a pre determined time or distance. Now its going to force you to fix it.

Thanks, I understand that, I wondering if anyone knows the specific problem. I called the local dealerships and they can't do anything until next week.

It would seem that you refilled last time before the DEF level got below the half mark. But refilling too often the computer never sees a drop and thinks the truck is not using any DEF at all causing the error. From what I've read, there is no way for anyone but the dealer to reset this. Once they do, make sure not to fill the DEF next time until it's at least at under the half way mark to prevent this from happening again.

It's actually not using any DEF at all, but I know what you mean by refilling to early.
I'm assuming it's the pump or the pump controls? I wasn't able to pull any codes.

Ah, I thought it was using some but still giving the error. Sorry I misinterpreted your issue...

wonder if removing the battery cables would be of any benefit since they can't get the truck in.

Any other service depts. nearby?

Unfortunately pulling the cables didn't work. Any new ideas before I take it in tomorrow?

The last couple times I filled mine it wasn't to half yet, or at least I never got any sort of message telling me so. I guess I better let it run down some this next time.

Hi Jefff H,

Did you drop by your dealership this morning? What's your truck's model year/mileage? I'll research some ways to help out.

It is a 2012 F350 with 120,000 miles. I will be dropping it off within the next hour or two.

Thank You.

Good news, I just received a call from the dealership and my truck is ready to pick up.
They said that they were able to put five gallons of DEF in it and that it was working fine now. I assume it must have had some ice in the fill tube when I tried to fill it even though I did squeeze the fill tube along it's entire length and it felt unrestricted. Maybe an air bubble? Anyway, thanks for all the help and suggestions!
