Help please, need advice

2004 F250 6.0
My mechanic has advised me that i am in the beginning stages of what could ultimately lead to a "runaway"
there is apparently oil leaking out of the turbo and into the intake(s).

i still need to go and look at this so he can show me in detail what he is describing. he called to have me look into "bulletproofing" which has me in a bit of a panic.
the problem was discovered while having a fuel leak looked into, which may mean replacing the upper filter housing.
He said that bulletproofing would be better than piecemeal fixing leaks that will eventually just lead back to more leaks, etc.

any advice will be greatly appreciated. this forum has saved me a lot of headaches and cash over the years, so i hope somebody has seen this type of thing and can set me down the right path.

thanks in advance

You do not need a bullet proof for a leaking turbo. Also, some oil in the boots is normal, it comes from the CCV system not the turbo, you will need to know how much oil is inside them to know if the turbo is dumping excess oil in. Bulletproofing also does not fix fuel leaks, he is trying to up sell you on work. Normal leakage at the upper housing is the plate on the fuel bowl, easy 15 minute o-ring fix.

thanks for the reply;

i am having him fix the fuel leak, hopefully it's only an O ring or seal.

when i get the truck back i will take photos and post them to show what he is referring to.
I will have him show me in detail so i will know what to take pics of.

Take pictures of the CAC system, it's plumbed from the hot side of the turbo, into the intercooler, and then into the intake elbow. The CCV (Crankcase vent) system is also plumbed into the air intake and is mostly reburned, but sometimes sucked in the CAC system which is why some oil is normal in there. He likely pulled off the cold side to access the fuel bowl to look for the leak, and seen that the low point off the bottom right of the intercooler had oil in it. Normal. If it poured out a quart or so, not normal

ok i will take whatever pictures i can and post them. he saw the oil he was referring to before he pulled the fuel filter so i'm not sure what he is talking about yet. he seemed pretty sure that the fuel filter housing had a crack.

also, would my truck be smoking out the tailpipe? because it seems that if there is a lot of oil getting into the intake it would cause soot or blue smoke wouldn't it?

Not always. Depends on how much oil if it failed. "Near" runaway would need to be a few qts in the CAC system, if there was that much it sure would be smoking while burning it yes.

Maybe 100% legit but I'm suspicious of how this is going for you. I agree it sounds like an upsale or someone who knows just enough to be dangerous.

"Bullet proofing" means different things to different people. Are you having to add oil to keep the level up?

Where are you located? Maybe you could be directed to a reputable shop.

Find another mechanic and get a second opinion, it sounds like you are getting taken for a ride.

yes that would be greatly appreciated.

i have had bad luck with several of the dealers in the area. the worst one wanted to replace seals for an oil leak to the tune of $2700, the research i gathered from here led me to find that it was just a sensor and a friend did that for $400. unfortunately he is no longer available. i live north of the river in the Kansas city, Mo area. i do not mind driving to get to a reputable mechanic. Midway Ford is the only dealer that hasn't had a chance to get on my bad side yet.

my current guy worked there for 10 years and i don't have any reason to disbelieve him, but i would like a second or even 3rd opinion on something like this

He's in the bay guys. This truck was nowhere near a runaway condition btw. It looks like it just about 13 years of ccv residue. We have it all apart getting it clean. The hot cac boot was split too (which was probably the map correlation issue). Luckily the throttle plate is the dummy one with no electronics in it,, so we are hot tanking it too. That thing sux to clean when it's got the guts in it. He has cyl 2 & 3 cont balance codes too. We are only doing #3 right now and are saving the even side for another trip. I made two videos

The second one is 14 mins long and isn't uploading. Freakin drag!!

I pulled and cleaned the egr valve because the computer showed it a lil sticky. Not out of spec,, just a lil slow. Lol. We also pulled the map hose and the freakin nipple stayed into the hose and pulled out of the intake (you late model guys have the 14mm threaded bung,, early guys have a pressed in nipple),, but we will get that back in. Needed to be cleaned. The boost test was fine with a non split boot btw.

Hopefully the #2 & #6 injectors survive for a while.

Julie should be calling you Jim about us doing the blue spring kit. It's a fuel pressure upgrade. I will toss the long video up if it ever decides to upload. Lol

Thanks again to FTE, PA Robert, Mustang 309, and all who replied to my post. Julie and Anthony are truly amazing. My wife and I dropped the truck off last night and spent some time hanging out at the shop.
They quickly eliminated all my worries and walked me thru the whole process, and then some. No joke, i had my best nights sleep since this drama started.
Talked to Julie, probably while Anthony was posting and opted for the Blue Spring Kit.
this will get me down the road a while longer, until i need to address the other injectors. maybe i can get the radio working again, lol,

I watched the video of the test and Anthony referred to codes for the injectors. Do the codes cause a CEL? What do the numbers on the left of the graph represent. And what deviations from Zero mean go/no go? Thanks
