E40D kills the motor when reverse is engaged
Hello,
My truck seems to have a issue with shifting into reverse. It only occurs after I have driven a while, and when I go into reverse for the first time after the drive.. ..ie.. reverse for parking. I watch the tac go up to about 1100 rpm, but when the tranny actually engages reverse, the rpm's drop down to 450-500 and kills the motor sometimes. I checked the tranny fluid, the motor just had new spark plugs in it, and there is no check engine light or blinking overdrive light. Any Ideas?
Thanks
Jake

My 96 Bronco with 351 used to do it regularly, especially in warmer weather. I did a complete tune up which included plugs, wires, cap and rotor, pcv valve, air filter, fuel filter, set timing and ran a tank of premium fuel with fuel injector cleaner. Besides the truck running a whole lot better I have only had it stall in reverse a twice in the past month since the tune up. Both times were right after the tune up. No stalling in reverse in the past few weeks. I am getting ready to change the transmission filter and fluid. Hopefully it won't start acting up again after that

MLPS stands for Manual Lever Position Switch, it tells the computer and the transmission what gear you have selected, we had one go bad on my dad's 93 F350, they arn't too hard to replace, it also is your neutral saftey switch, and reverse light switch

My truck died occasionally at one point in time, as well. I suspected many things, but it came down to the catalytic converter being plugged up.
Unhook your O2 sensor and see if it'll run smoother in higher RPM's... that was how I found my problem...

mine is a 90 no computer codes at all.my brother was driving it and the hose on aftermarket trans cooler come off he drove it about a mile till it would go no more.we fixed line and put 10 qrts of fluid in it to get it back to full mark.now most of the time when you first crank it and pull in gear for/rev you have to give it gas and it takes a few seconds to engage in gear when you put in reverse it dies.IT DOES NOT SLIP AT ALL.the motor was covered in fluid and i pressure wash it off good thinking maybe a connector was dirty.im going to get it rebuilt at end of month because i plan on keeping it forever but im still driving it and its a pain to back a trailer holding the gas and brake.just tring to see if there was anything to try for now thanks henry
