Ok you guys can call me whatever ya want...but this is seriously getting on my nerves.
The bolt nearest the firewall on the passenger side valve cover...I cannot for the life of me get that thing off.
Prior owner must have He-Manned the dang thing on. I can't seem to find any combination of sockets, I have tried all my various 13mm sockets with and without extensions, with and without universal joints and just can't seem to find a way to get bite enough to get it loose. With an extension I don't have enough room, without an extension I can'e seem to get on the bolt good enough. Nevermind its hard as hades to reach back there....(i don't have a cool shop or garage with neato stuff like topside creeper)....
Sidenote whomever put the valve cover on last time it was put on, went overboard, all the bolts have been extremely challenging to break loose. Excessively so.
If anyone has a tip or combination of tools to help that will make this easier I am all ears.
(I can't see it well enough to know if it is rounded off or not) I know I didn't round it off so there is that....
All you masters of the wrench laugh at me if you choose, its all good.
First thing is dod you pull the vacuum box off the air plenum. If not remove that. If you already have done that I used to use a 6 point 13mm wrench and lay on the engine almost and reach down along the side of the head so my arm was laying horizontal to the head and pull like hell. Good chance when it does go your going to cut your arm or smash a finger.
yep I removed that vacuum box, (didn't know what it was...lol@me) I am just struggling to get the angle. Everyone makes everything here look so easy, of all the things I have done on my truck this dang bolt has been a real pita
My biggest thing is I just can't seem to get bite enough on the bolt, as I said earlier I tried nearly every combination of sockets/adapters i could think of. I have even tried using different ratchets as well looking for the magic touch...very frustrating
I feel your pain. I've had the best luck with a 13mm shallow swivel socket. I know you tried u-joints, but having the joint closer to the bolt head with a shallow socket will allow for more torque.
I use a 3/8 ratchet and deep well 6 point 13mm on mine. Seems like different trucks take different combinations cause some engines sit closer to the firewall than others. I can get to that bolt real easy on mine, but I have worked on some that I have the same problem you're having. Doesn't help either when some dumba$$ tightens the crap out of them!
I'll be driving through there this afternoon going back to Raleigh to work. Coming down 52 hitting 40 east.
Success, it took getting in just the right position, now I can do it easily....well I did get another teardrop shaped 3/8 ratchet, it fit better than my go-to 3/8th that has a fatter head....
Thanks everyone!
Oh happy days!! Got the passenger side glow plugs in before the rain set in!
