I finally got my front driveshaft in after I had to modify the tranny crossmember to allow the driveshaft free movent. Since i have new gears in the front i decided to start to break them in. I locked the tcase into 4wd leaving the hubs unlocked. As i started to drive foreward i heard a faint click click click. So i stopped put it in reverse and went foreward again, no clicking. I started driving around but what the noise was, was still haunting me. From a stop i left it out of 4 then tried to lock it in at about 5mp, bad clicking like it's not going all the way into 4wd. With it stil clicking i slowly stopped and the tcase made a clunk. I disengaged it then put it back in from a dead stop and took off, no clicking. so i drove around like that for a bit to see if the clicking would come back, when i approached the 30mph the clicking started up again. The TCase worked before i started the swap and i han't used it since. Did i put something out of wack when i modified the crossmember, can the linkange be adjusted? Or is there something really wrong in the case?
nothing touches, closest it gets to the crossmember is about 1.5 inches.
I think i need to support the new crossmember a bit more, I made the crossmember while it was still on the truck so everything would line up a bit easier. I made it bridge the driveshaft and bolt to the upper framerail. after i made the bridge i cut out the old part of the crossmember and as i did that it dropped about an 1/8th of an inch. I'm going to try jacking it back up a bit and then welding in some supports and more gussets, and see if that helps.

I'm guessing it's a manual shift t-case? If so maybe it isn't lined up properly and you aren't getting full throw on the shifter/linkage and it isn't getting all the way into gear. I would put it back in and as soon as i heard the clicking I would jump out with it idling along in 4-lo and look under it and see what's going on.
it engages into 4lo as far as i know, it's 4hi that clicks when i engage it. I'm sure it's something simple as me jacking the xmember back up and adding support so that it doent flex down.
well, i added more supports with no avail, don't know what to do now....pull it all down and redo the crossmember or maybe shim the transmission back up, don't know.... Talked to a friend and he said that the crosmember should not affect it going into 4wd. Any thoughts?
I don't think it should either. The only question I have is whether it's in the same spot it should be. Like is the linkage binding and it's not getting all the way into 4 hi. Have you checked to see if the DC joint is hitting itself on the front driveline?
Some people call it a constant velocity joint but it's really not. It's called a double cardan joint (check spelling). Your truck may or may not have one. Sometimes if they hit lightly it will sound like a ticking sound but usually not. It's a long shot. Usually it'll sound more like a deep metal clunking sound. It's caused by too much driveline angle.
no cardian on this truck, may need to go to it later on for higher flex. Still haven't figured out the clicking, i'm going to drop the whole crossmember tomorrow and clean up any welds that MIGHT be interfering.
there's a couple possibilities here ... one is too much angle on the front d-shaft and the noise is u-joint contact with the yoke ... another is front differential noise - with the hubs unlocked and the trans case in 4wd - the front internals will still be spinning right on out to the hublocks.
I would suggest you pull the driveshaft and try it again .. no noises means it's not the transfer case and probably associated with the driveshaft/rotating front end components.
now lock the hubs, any noise? it's front end related
If no noise apparent in both "tests" the clicking is most likely related to the driveshafts ujoints/yokes at too much angle and contacting each other in some way or it has to do with being in 4wd with the hubs unlocked.
It could be a possibility that it's the u-joints clicking at the tcase when i hear the clicking at 30mph, but it has no clicks (none that i can hear) up till then, but it will clcik at any speed when shifted on the fly. Can the driveshaft putting pressure on the yoke have any affect in this matter it seemed like it was very difficult to get my driveshaft in. I had to pull it back and compress the shaft to get it in.
Well, i tried putting it in 4hi with the hubs locked, i had no dirt to play in so i kept it slow on my street, locked it in on the fly, no clicking, i'm guessing that maybe because the higher pressure on the yoke from the driveshaft wasn't allowing the driveshaft to spin super easy and not allowing the driveshaft to syn with the tcase and let it go into 4hi. I'm goning to wait till i find a nice dirt road to see if it click in 4hi with the hubs locked at 30mph.. How much can i get a new double cardian front driveshaft for my truck? I'm sure i'm gonna need the extra driveshaft angle for wheeling. Thank you all for your help guys.
