Steering wheel controls

Hi,

So I have a loose wire to my steering wheel controls. They don't light up anymore and when I smack the back of the wheel, they will light momentarily. Also, 2 of the radio buttons work intermittently. How do I access them?

Thanks!

Go to the Excursion Forum Tech Folder sticky thread.

Scroll down to Interior > Electrical > OD Switch Chaffed Wire Fix 1

Thanks for the link. I will check this wire. I assume that once I have the covers off, I will be able to see the wires to the controls? and the controls themselves - From what I read, it is either the clock spring or could be the buttons themselves (previous owner pushing too hard). How can I get to the buttons?

Does the wheel have to come off?

Depends on what you are trying to accomplish and the severity of the problem.

Well, I won't know until I get in there. If it is not the wires leading to the buttons, then I have to assume the button contacts themselves. That is why I am asking on how to access them - do I need to be prepared to pull the wheel and/or any other tools I need.

On another note, last night driving home, the lights for the steering wheel controls light up on right hand turns and then turned off when straightening out again. Is this indicative of a clock spring issue?

At this point I would think the wheel will have to come off completely.
If I were betting man I would bet your issue is the contact(s) between the wheel and the column.
