Limited Slip identification

I have a 2000 Eddie Bauer 5.4L. The door sticker says H9 for the axle code. Which should be a 3.55 limited slip.

The tag on the rear diff cover says xL55 9 75 (the X has been permanently obscured by the cover bolt but I can make out what appears to be the lower part of a 3). Which also points to being a 3.55 limited slip.

However, I took the cover off to change the fluid and saw this:

Unfortunately the carrier was oriented this way so I couldnt get a better shot, but I didn't see anything between the spider gears:

If this is a limited slip, it's unlike any limited slip I'm familiar with.

Or did an open diff get installed at some point?

If you turn one of the rear wheels forward does the other turn backwards?

I will find where i got this from but check the Axle code on the door. I THINK it was blue oval but will double check.

^^ that list doesn't make much sense. I know the diff is a 9.75 not an 8.8, yet an H9 (which is what I have) is listed as an 8.8.

Not sure what you were expecting to see.
The clutch packs, one on each side, are outboard of the diff side gears.

Thanks. Normally I see them between the spider gears. I didn't know if that was a shim or a clutch disc.

Haven't had a chance. If it's LS, should both turn the same direction or one the opposite direction?

I'm skeptical this test will reveal anything: the speed at which I can turn the wheel by hand is probably not a speed that would kick the clutch in. I've done this test on known open diffs in the past and the opposite wheel turns the opposite direction.

Standard rear they will spin opposite, with a LS they will spin only the same way (unless the clutch packs are toast).

So it is the LS. Only the 8.8 has something between the spider gears (the "S" preload spring). The 9.75 and 10.5 don't.
