My wife says the 97 3.0 2wd has an intermittent beeping of various patterns and volumes. Slow beep, fast beep, continuous beep. Not the ding bell you hear when you leave the lights on. I've only heard it once. It was continuous low volume and it stopped before I could locate the source. It seems to happen on first start up but not all the time and goes away after a few miles.
I'm guessing it's the airbag module(blue case) located on the left wall inside on the drivers side. Once the fusible link blows it will beep intermittently but you should also get a light on in the display panel.
Interesting, I may have to look for that. Mine beeps when I turn the key to ACC. Beeps 5 times for a total of 5 cycles, does it again after about 25 mins. I notice it when I'm eating my lunch at jobsites. The door/key dinger, I yanked that out some time ago, as it started chiming while I was going 65 mph on the bypass!
do a search on airbag module. you will find many causes of error codes including shorts. the clockspring is mentioned often but don't count on that being the only cause.
Remember, you are messing with the airbag system. To avoid risk of injury, might want to find a professional mechanic to look at it.
Okay I disconnected the connector shown in the picture and the beeping stopped. Is it okay like that or should I disconnect the other one also?
BTW What the hell is a clock spring? I've never heard of that before. Is there another name for that?

Mine started the same beeping years ago, I unplugged the same module. But I miss honking my horn at dip**** drivers SO BAD, that I'm finally going to fix it.
I hope my horn, cruise, and airbag comes back to like, especially the horn.
As you look at that part, picture the inside with about 20 wraps of ribbon cable like a loosely wrapped roll of tape. As time, heat, and friction from turning the wheel takes it toll. It fails. Getting the steering wheel off was the only pain in the butt.
I just went out and checked. My horn, lights, and turn signals are all working. Don't care about cruise control. Is there anything else this fool system can affect.
Mine started with the beeps and the airbag light coming on from time to time, then the horn would honk briefly when turning sometimes, then it just started honking and wouldn't stop. Then the cruise started turning on and putting the pedal to the floor. I disconnected things as they failed. This process took months for all the failures to be complete. I have plugged everything back in and I am waiting for the new clockspring hoping everything will work.
airbag, and thats what was beeping from what you showed unpluged, Is your airbag light on?
I assume it's still on, if the bulb hasn't burned out. I put black tape over it years ago. Same with the check engine light.
Unplugging that connector is what STOPPED the beeping.
