Rebuilt or buy aftermarket?

Well last night I got the blinking O/D light of death while at IHOP. Tried to limp it home and didn't make it out of the parking lot. So the E40D need to be either rebuilt or, purchase something better aftermarket that's affordable. Looking for pros and cons of each, and what any of you might have experienced. I haven't got any quotes on a rebuild yet because it happened at 2230 and its 715 now and I'm at work. If I rebuild what should I upgrade?

Triple disc billet torque converter is a must....

Depending on if you do some of the work or you farm it off, it can be any where from $1,700...$10,000+

Most local shops around me were in the $2800 range

Can you tell me what's so great about him? It's 3 1/2 hour drive I can pull the trans drive it to him and pick it back up I guess

Most of those transmission guys like to put it in themselves and tweak on it to get it right.

Glenn tows HEAVY! 5th wheel and a car behind that.... plus he pulls cross country.

He's the best there is, that's it. I've been extensively researching replacement E40D options for the last 3 months and i can't find a single thread in any forum that knocks on his transmissions. He also offers an Econo HD transmission but does not list it on his website. The Econo HD is a step below the Towmaster and is designed for stock/slightly modified trucks. Based on other owners feedback you can call him and explain what your needs are and he will determine what you need without trying to upsell you. Sounds like a solid guy.

Email him for pricing. I just emailed him again to ask about appointments to have him do the one-day program on my rig and he says he's booked up to 4 weeks out.

Well guys I can't afford 4k. A diesel shop closer to home will be doing the work, I spoke with them about upgrading things if it was possible they where very receptive. Any input on what I can or should upgrade would be very helpful. Specific parts would be great.

No I don't. Should I have them install those? I'm sure I could do it myself but if they are already there why not?

Well as far as the gauges go it comes down to whether you think that you will be satisfied with the job that someone else does. In my opinion gauge installation isn't very mechanically intensive but instead it's all about neatness. Tucking the wires just right and making it look as factory as possible. I've seen the results of some hasty lazy gauge jobs.. -_-

For the cooler i'd try to gauge whether the shop is familiar with the retrofit if you do the 6.0 cooler mod but if you get a vehicle specific kit from Trucool or something then I wouldn't worry. You don't want a hack job on that 6.0 one. Labor should be reasonable since it's not hard to access. I haven't done a cooler on mine yet i'm waiting until I get my new trans from John Woods in Jan-Mar 2016.

If you never built any transmissions its better to have it done. As stated 3 disk converter and there's kits to add extra clutch's. here's some parts you can add also
9694805K or 9694801K
3694813K
3694809K
3642502K
3674401
E4OD 4R100 Transmission Valve Body Valves,Transmissionpartsusa.com
That's where I get some of my parts from. there's more there if you wanna look around.
But you may want to have it looked at and codes read before you get into rebuilding it. mite be something simple if it just quit all of a sudden

Like dieselhead said, he can do the one day deal. How are going to beat a lifetime warranty? It not 4K for the econo, I don't think. Byron got one of those, PM him.

I called about the econo, its $3895, which is pretty much 4kk, plus with the drive and all that its either a dn long day, or two days neither that I can afford to loose while we are chopping feed and in the middle of eggnog season. Trust me I'd love to have that transmission, but its not in the cards, as it is I'm only paying for parts and some labor, and trading for most of the labor (I'm "selling" him a steer he wants to raise for meat)
