Hey how are you guys doing. I have a 87 f150. It's has a 302 5.0 liter in it now. With 80001 miles on it and I'm getting about 12 mpg. No lift 31 inch tires. But I want to lift it and put bigger tires on it. But I would rather not get 8 miles to the gallon. Is there a bigger engine I can put in my truck that will slide right in without messing with electrical or anything. Never engine swapped before. Thanks guys
The 5.0 should get about 15mpg overall unless you only drive it like 3 miles before parking it again, doing that the motor doesn't even get into closed loop so milage is gonna suck. What gearing does this truck have? Find the axle code on the drivers door pillar and post it up. Anything less than 4.10 is counter productive with this motor but unfortunately 3.55 and 3.08 were the most common, if your truck has the latter gear it'll be thirsty and a dog. A 5.8 is almost a direct swap, it'll use all the same wiring and transmission and physically bolt right in, but the exhaust has to be modified slightly and you need a different flywheel or flexplate for whatever trans you have. To do this swap you need a complete 5.8 EFI motor as very few parts will transfer from the 5.0.
When my '87 Bronco (302/C6) was my daily driver I still got around 13mpg and that was with a 6" lift, the factory 3.55 gears and 35" tires. When was the last time you did a tune up/maintenance?
