Hey folks!
Great site, lots of good info.
Been many years since I was a lucky owner of a classic, but really enjoyed my '67 Bronco "Sport Truck" as well as my '69 F-250... Have had 'em all the way to '88 (didn't care for that one).
Anyway, I'm going to look at a very nice '76 F-100 4x4 that is gorgeous. 302 Windsor with 4 speed manual. 84,000 original miles.
Not sure I can post pictures, hope so to give you a clue as to how nice this is. The fellow is asking $5k, but needs money for college so I'm confident he'll accept less. But before I dive in, is that a good price for it? I see in NADA "classic" the low retail is $4700 and high $11k ????
Even the engine compartment on this thing is spotless, interior too.
Thanks for any advice on what to look for, fair price, etc. If I purchase it, this site will be invaluable!
Welcome to FTE, looks like a nice truck for 5K or less. That wide chrome fender well lip trim is not factory, and the B pillar mounted cab handles can be rust magnets.

We'll thank you!
He's a younger man, in college, and needing $$. He has done a lot of restoring but said when he got it it was very nice. Got the bug and I think he spent far more than he realized. I think it was his dad's.
I'll check the handle areas. So, I see many pictures online of this make/year that have trim, many not. Would this be a "JC Whitney" type of aftermarket thing? Here's a pic from under the hood, looks very clean and I'm wondering if he had her all down and did it right. Sure looks like it.
I currently own an '06 Titan, and it's been a fantastic truck (128k and still original sparkplugs) but it's not 4wd and now living in mountains so need 4x4.
I get 13 mpg when towing good load, 18 mpg on long highway trips, and am not reading good things about mileage on these. 4 spd manual might help, but still it's gonna be a drinker.
To be honest, I want a pre-79 so I can actually work on the dang thing, and also a non-solid state vehicle. Be it large solar storm or EMP, most of everything I own could be toast. But I'd sell the Titan, get a little gas miser for most driving.
Thanks again for the welcome and info.
IMO opinion do NOT get the dent chrome or race trac chrome.. again it can be another rust magnet. And it would require some body work ability to get it on there. The mount clips mount on a rivet head that are not easily installed.
And for sure NO on JC Whitney to get that trim. If you have to have it, Dennis Carpenter would be your #1 source for quality parts like that, but it will be $$$.
Interesting p/s pump cap with the T handle, that is not OEM. Short bed 1/2 ton, 302 and 4spd with 31 or 33's...Yea is will be a drinker, but not that bad is you drive it like you have some sense. lol
You can get the correct thinner and better looking OEM style fender lip trim and correct mirror head from DC (Dennis Carpenter) or JBG (Jeffs Bronco Graveyard), NPD National Parts Depot. Or even LMC as a last resort.
Wow you're fast! But thanks again.
I'm not one to "bling" out an old vehicle. Like them as stock as possible. Thanks for the tip on the trim contact. Depending on cost, might go back to stock, but no plan on adding any trim. I've had my Titan hit in parking lots twice in the last 2 yrs., so even though I have a spinal injury I park in the back 40 and take two spaces now. Nobody is decent enough anymore to leave a note, and insurance now considers it moving accident. And they weren't dings either, they were >$600 damage each time.
I'll be sure to post what I see/do on Friday after I check it out.
Welcome to FTE. That looks like a nice truck. But I get skeptical when I see older vehicles like these with newer paint jobs. I'd start looking all over the under side of the truck for signs of poor rust repair. Especially in the rust belt areas of the nation. Be sure to look carefully up inside the rear wheel wells, and under the floor pans of the cab for starters. Also just so you know, (and this is not real big deal so don't get frightened) the front bumper and those mirrors are incorrect for the truck. The front bumper is off of a 78/79 truck. And the mirrors are either aftermarket or from and 80-96 style truck.
I too found that p/s pump cap interesting. But I don't think that is a 302. It's not a good pic. but it doesn't look like nor should it in anyway be a 302 or 351w. It looks to me to be either a 351m or 400. And don't expect better than 8-10 mpgs. Even with the 4 speed.
I dont think you could get a 302 in a 70's 4x4. Any way I had a1982 302 auto 4x4 running 32's and it could get 16 mpg.
You are correct. You could not get a 302 in a 70's 4x4. But with custom frame side engine mounts one could be installed. However those aren't custom mounts.
Wow, guess I've been out of the "Classic" loop too long. Sure appreciate all the info, will put to good use. Can't figure out why one would install a 302 if stock was 351 or 390? Did find that there were some "late 70's" that came with 302 blocks from Mexico, rare but good blocks according to the site. I'm curious as to what with and why he restored it the way he did. Will sure find out. The less stock it is, the less it's worth (at least resale) in my opinion.
Really wish it had the straight six in it.
As I said, I'll report back after I check it out. Just missed a deal on same one, ALL stock restored (351) and it was saweeeet! Sitting on a street, called the guy two days later and he had just traded it in on a Ranger. He wanted $6k, they gave him $4500. Tried to talk him into cancelling the deal, per 36 hr rule, but he had to go out of town. Called dealer, "the vehicle will not be up for sale"... Crap. I would've given him $5500 cash. Oh well, you snooze you lose.
Stay tuned.
Back again...... Reading reading... According to Wiki on the F series, it lists this...
So a little confusing, but I'll get it figured out. Now I'm really curious..
Rich if you read and look closely at the text and sketches you'll notice that is says for the 4wd 6 cyl. 300, and 351M and 400. The 302 parts are for 2wd only. It just says F100/350. And the sketches show the engine towers mounted to the cross member for the 2wd chassis. The 4wd chassis the engine towers mount directly to the frame rails since that cross member is deleted.
