Mystery Solved?

Thanks everyone for all the help. Ive been able to solve some of the mystery. Here's what I found.

- The trucks ID plate has been been changed in the past. Two owners ago, the title was destroyed somehow. A teen claims his dog ate it so the story goes. ID was changed with a donor trucks for it's title.
- The engine turns out to be a B9AE-F. That makes it a 292 unless it has ECZ main caps, then it's a 312 and a Mercury which is possible.
-The heads are a COTE-B. That makes it a 292. Anyone know if these could be used on a 312? I see that ECZ-G are used on both and was wondering mine were the same.
- I think I got luck on the intake manifold. It's a ECZ-9425-B. Opens many doors are far as carbs are concerned.
- Brings me to the carb. Not original to this motor. It is a ford, ID C5VF-B. Makes it a 65' Lincoln-Mercury. Don't really matter since I see a Holly Double pumper or Avenger in my future. Not sure what size to get. My first thought was a 750 cfm (insert Tim Allen impression) but maybe I better go with a 650 cfm.

In conclusion, it's safe to say I have a 292. Won't know 100% until I pull the engine and drop the oilpan so I can check the maincaps. Speaking of which, where is the best place to get gaskets? I'll need one for the pan, valve covers, intake, and exhuast. I'm not planning to rebuild it, just open it up to inspect.

Thanks
Allen

Mystery Solved?

Hey Allen. While looking for stuff for the '58 I'm getting, I noticed there are a lot of gasket sets going on eBay. In eBay Motors, click on "parts" and type "292". You can also check out motorhaven.com, dennis-carpenter.com, or vintage-ford.com. They all have a vast assortment of parts (N.O.S. and repro), but shop around for the best prices.

As far as the carb goes, I think a 750 would be a bit much, personally. Seems it would suck a lot more gas with little power benefit. Just my 2 cents. Hope I helped somewhat.

Mystery Solved?

If you have a good auto parts store like NAPA or CarQuest, they can get you the gasket sets. Stay away from the auto zones, Pep Boys, Advance Auto. They don't have anyone working there that understands anything made before 1985.

Mystery Solved?

Heads are all interchangable, the ones on it are small valve low compression; all after 59 are junk IMO as Ford killed Y block performance in favor of the FE series.

ECZ-G or similar heads are nice but getting pricey; they are also pretty thin to start with and can be a problem if they need cleaning up.
ECZ-C heads are more plentiful and offer excellent performance in a truck as well as no problems on regular gas.

A 600-650 cfm carb is more than enough for even a mild hop-up; double pumper buys you nothing.
