My kids gets his license next fall and wants a ranger, wondering if anyone has stuffed a diesel under the hood of one and if so what works and with the best transmission. Prefer an automatic. We don't check emissions older than 15 years here now, so... why not?
There have been factory diesel Rangers, I think in the '80's. The new Ranger overseas has a diesel option. People have done diesel swaps in them. User Diesel Brad has talked about doing one. Don't know if he did.

I'd think a 4cyl turbo would give good enough power to haul his dirt bikes around and yeild excellent mileage. Although he keeps bugging for a clean OBS 7.3L but there aren't any up here anymore so we'd have to travel south for one!
I am in the process of gathering all the parts for a 4bt swap into my 04
So far I have the 4bt(with Ford small block trans adapter) and the small block ZF5 to go with it.
The plan is to over the winter gather the remainder of the parts and when it is done snowing install it

I can't remember when the last time was I even saw one the old Rangers with the factory diesel option. I don't think they made many to begin with. If they did, they weren't common in the States.

I was asking if anyone had done the project and if they had was wondering what components they used. Thanks

This is waht I was looking for. What state are you in? What year truck? My son and i might attempt this as well as long as the power, mileage and cost are decent. Thanks!

I am in PA and the truck is a 2004 4wd with a 4.0 and a 5 speed
Stock 4bt are about 110hp/265tq
stock 4.0 is 210hp/254tq
I plan in turning the cummins up a bit and being about 225hp/450tq
Also with the correct driving style I should have no issues seeing 30mpg on the highway(I currently get 22 with my 4.0)
I currently have a 85 Ranger with the factory Diesel. It will get 35mpg consistently, and it has plenty of power.
As far as the OBS 7.3L trucks.... they are near impossible to find a clean rust free truck in Kentucky. I just sold a rust free 90, but it went to a guy on the Missouri line. All of my trucks I brought back from out West.

What did you do to give it Plenty of power since they are only 84hp stock and wouldn't get out of their own way?
It runs fine stock. Always has. I didn't buy the truck for speed. I bought it for economy and longevity . It is also 4x4, and it still has plenty of power. I also have a 84 Escort Diesel and a 86 Escort Diesel with only 56 horse power from the factory (which is about what the 83-84 Rangers had with the Perkins diesels). I don't have any complaints about how much power they have either.
It isn't the horse power so much as the torque. I run the intersrates fine at highway speeds. My 85 F350 Diesel isn't even 200hp, but it has pulled every 5th wheel I have ever hooked to it without an issue. It runs interstate speeds just fine as well.
