Turbo question

OK I know this might seem like a silly question but please bear with me I have not worked on turbos since the early 90's. I know the clamp is way wrong but how can I fix this issue without taking the whole turbo off? or can it be done without removing the turbo? I will need fairly explicit directions and photos would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Looks like it is just over tightened. If it isn't stripped out, you might be able to re-use it. If it is ruined, DieselOrings.com might have them. RiffRaff will have one if Bob doesn't.

I'd go with the over-torqued diagnosis as well. Those worm-drive marman clamps have a tendency to kick the tail in the direction of bolt rotation as you tighten them within millimeters of their lives.

Personally I prefer to use Clay over at RiffRaff, but he's had my business for a very long time. I have also used DieselOrings with zero complaints - both carry quality products and have great customer service.

I believe it's part number 1831214C1 on RiffRaff

Both have it for less than $10 http://www.dieselorings.com/1999-200...let-clamp.html

You can easily replace the clamp without removing the turbo or anything else on the system. Just completely un-thread the old one, pull it off and put the new one on. I think torque on that clamp is around 14ft/lbs, which really isn't much.

Ok I just gave it a test drive what boost psi should I expect to see? I was seeing the boost hit about 10psi before it shifted. Is that good bad or average. Todays learning curve is on the turbo.....lol..

Depends on what modifications you have and where you are reading boost from. 10 psi is kinda low regardless. You should be up around 17-20 psi on a stock truck on a wide open throttle (WOT) run.

Ok I will run it WOT tomorrow and see what the boost is. Yes the truck is stock. I am hoping to be able to join the mod club but the $$$$ isn't here yet. Thanks for all the help. I hope my newbie questions aren't causing anyone to fall out of their chair laughing...

Ok, what did I miss? I don't see anything wrong with the turbo or any of the clamps in the pic.

Are you guys referring to the portion of the clamp already through the screw-let that's sitting a tad ****-eyed?

Eh, I guess it could be a symptom of a clamp getting ready to fail, or even a clamp not installed exactly perfect, but like others have said, if you're concerned enough, order a replacement from Riffraff.

Ok so I took the Excursion out and ran her WOT and boost was at 18.3 psi. So the clamp is working alright. I will keep an eye on it every few fill ups. So I guess I was just worrying about how it looked. Thanks for everyone's help and for listening to me whine.... you guys rock
