Starting to trouble shoot the AC. First timer working on a AC. Guessing this will be out of my league mechanically, but what the heck.
Is this where the orifice tube resides.
Thanks
Yep. Take that connection loose and the orfice tube is in the tube. They are pushins with small o'rings. They can be a PITA to get out. There are some tools to do this.
sometimes the spring locks are a total pain especially if they get rusted like yours looks to be a little bit. go ahead and get either a quality Lisle fuel line separator kit, or one from Harbor Freight. they make orifice tube remover tools, but you can use a pair of needle nose pliers if you are careful, but if its a real pain in the butt to get out, just put compressed air in the other side of the line and it will push it right out
Never heard of using compressed air to help remove it. Plan on replacing the 2 o-rings on the line and lube them with the correct a/c oil for either R-12 (if you can find any or afford it) or most likely R-143a.
My question would be: why do you want to replace just the orifice or is that the only thing you are unsure of?
edit: working on the air conditioning is no different than replacing any other component. Everything is easy to replace except for maybe the evaporator ( I hate pulling heater boxes but have done it a few times as a tech) If the compressor came apart plan on not only replacing the orifice tube/filter but also the accumulator. Depending on how much shrapnel is in the system you might also want to flush out the other parts as best as you can. I do my own a/c work and then take the vehicle to get evacuated and recharged. Paying for the charge is cheaper than buying a good vacuum pump.
