E4OD Trannies
-- even the 2 gallons that I added. Most of it comes out the (rubber) dust cover in the bellhousing. I suspect it is the front pump and/or the torque converter seal. As I understand it, these are not "heavy duty" items from the factory - which is why so many big-block and diesel owners have trouble with this tranny.I know that from about 1989 the F250 big block gas and the diesels with automatic trannies typically used the E4OD transmission until the last few years it was fitted with a different nomenclature.
I also know that in 1995 there were some upgrades done to the transmission...
In calling around in regards to my now broken transmission, I am being told that there are specific years for this truck's replacement transmission... only a '91 or '92 will do.
I was told by someone (who I called) that the big difference as to why new ones will not work in my truck is in the electronics, and further resarch leads me to believe that it was the connections to the solenoids or something.
So my questions are:
- Will a '95+ transmission be a better candidate for this truck (heavy usage with towing, etc), since these transmissions have "updated" components?
- Will a '95 + transmission work for me if I get an accompanying harness (or build one) for the electrical connections?
- Are there other alternative automatics that I can run on this rig?
Thanks in advance!
Nol
Your best bet is to have it rebuilt with all of the available upgrades. This will make it as good or better than the '95+ ones.
If you are willing to give up even more gas mileage, a C-6 should fit, as they were still used well into the '90s.
