Exclamation Help Please - 2000 Excursion V10 engine light

Hi everyone, Id like to start off by saying im glad to be part of this forum. I bought my first Ex 3 months ago and love it. Unfortunately its time for inspection and I am having engine light issues. It was throwing misfire codes so I changed plugs and coil packs. Still having issues with random cylinder codes. Figured maybe the coils were a bad brand. I tried more coils and plugs and still having problems. The truck is not misfiring at all. My friend is saying it could be the ecm being the problem.
Before i dropped 400 on a new one i figured i would ask the experts on here. Has anyone came across this? Thanks

I had a similar issue with cylinder 9. After I changed the cracked spark plug and installed a new motorcraft coil pack, I was still getting a misfire on that cylinder. Turned out to be a broken wire just after the connector that plugs into the coil pack. It wasn't noticeable to the eye, only showed up when tested. Cut the wire back and installed a new connector and all was good.

Instead of wasting still more money throwing more parts at it, invest that money into having someone who knows what they are doing diagnose the issue for you. You need to know what cylinder(s) to focus on, otherwise you will waste considerably more money and time "shotgunning" the system blindly and hoping to get lucky. If you have the inclination, it's not hard to learn how to pull the needed diagnostic data from the PCM. There are literally hundreds of misfire-related threads in the forum that relate how.

Do NOT just replace the PCM without knowing what the proper procedure is. If you do, you'll have an even BIGGER problem.

+1. Same thing happened to me but it was an injector connector. Always keep a couple spares handy now.

Which brand coils and plugs were used? Did you use new boots and springs? Dielectric grease on the boot tips?
