I just checked my timing chain for slackness against movement of the distributor (1992 5.0 engine) and that seemed ok. About 3-5 degrees max slackness. However when I line up the vibration damper on TDC the rotor is 90 degrees out from #1 cylinder. Is this possible with a running engine?? Tried two rotations and it points 90 degrees left or right from #1?? I've been getting ready to tear the engine down due to valve train or rod bearing noise but this is something new. Could the vibration damper have been put on 90 degrees out (after new front seal replaced).. I'm stumped.
Not likely, the vibration bampner fits in a keyway or slot on the crank snout. What's probaly happened is that the rubber inner piece on the dampner has slipped.Pull out the number one sparkplug and turn the engine over by hand until you feel the number one cylinder is at top dead center. You can stick a pencil in the hole and feel for the upward movement to stop. The rotor should be pointing to the number one plug now.Check your balancer marks. If they're off mark tdc and recheck your timing.Hope this helps.
Ok. I'll do that tomorrow. I didn't know the damper could slip. If it is slipped then would it cause excessive vibration on the crankshaft. I noticed 1/2 of its diameter is thicker (deeper) than the rest, I assume to balance the crank. The thicker part has the TDC groove on it.
Ditto to what slave said! A quick note on checking the TDC have a friend crank the engine by hand as you hold your finger in the plug hole and when the compression blows your finger away you are getting close! You may know this trick but, I thought I might save you some time!!!!
Yeah I'll do that. I guess the damper should be replaced now. Are aftermarket ones better than OEM, for slipping I mean? I find that to be a design flaw!
someone will correct me if i am wrong but i think oem would be ok as a replacement.... it is more of an age thing your truck is ten years old... i got a 93 so i am looking forward to the day when i gotta do the same thing lol. good luck
