headlight switch

I know I have seen similar posts to this one before. I needed to replace my headlight switch..so I did. I used an 86 ford, as it is my stepdads and has been sitting for several years now.

It fit right into the original harness, but I have no dimmer OR dashlights now.

The original problem was that the dimmer didn't work 95% of the time and I had to turn and twist to get the dash lights on.

The old plug looked like that above lines. The new plug was identical except for the missing the middle bottom plug.

The 86 switch was missing one prong from the center of the plug...perhaps that is the dash dimmer? The replacement still rotates, has a good spring with the contact still good to the spring.

Let me know if it is not compatable or if I am missing something obvious!

Thanks,
Robert Nolan

The configuration of the wires in the plug is probably different. I wouldn't expect Ford to keep it the same. You most likely have to test each circuit to find out where each wire should go. You will have to probably swap positions of the wires in the plug to match to the new switch. it sounds like you're asking for alot of work, just to save the price of a new switch. Look on Ebay or or the various truck sites for a switch( new or used) for your truck. You don't say what year you have, but I'd find a switch before I would go to all that trouble.

1966.

the switch and everything is identical except for the missing plug. It mounts just a bit closer to the dash than the old one is, but if went in fine.

I will check the color of the wires, etc.

Everything works normal on my truck with the replacement. Headlights, parking lights, and cab light. The only problem is that the dash lights don't turn on. Because of that I can't tell if the dimmer works, although the replacement switch rotates until you get to the spot where the interior light switches on.

I will check ebay, etc for a new one if I can't get this one to work properly

Thanks.

The first post I thought was strange. Now a second one for a thread that is 8 years ago is stretching it.

Not a good idea. We have the 25 post requirement for a reason. We want people to be active in the forums, not "post padding" just to be able to sell something. I would rethink what your doing.................
