I have 66 F-100 with a 240 inline 6. When running oil pressure is 20-25 at idle and 45-50 at 2000 on a mechanical gauge attached directly to the oil galley. I am only receiving oil through 2 push rods, no 1 exhaust and no 4 intake I think(don't remember exactly). The oil pressure gauge also moves rapidly back and forth 5 psi at all rpm not in relation to engine speed. It has one collapsed lifter(will be replaced) but otherwise has practically no valve noise. Should I be getting oil through all push rods and why is the oil pressure moving back and forth 5psi?
When I got the truck it had been setting for 10 years with several bent push rods. I replaced the push rods(valves not stuck) and started it for the first time. the push rods are not clogged and the engine has plenty of clean new oil and filter. Valve lash was set by installing new push rods and leaving 10-12 thousands clearance with piston at top dead compression on each cylinder. Engine was then started and ran for 5 minutes. It was then re-adjusted by tightening the nuts down until the push rod was hard to spin and then 1/2 additional turn again at tdc on each cylinder. Total engine run time is less than 20 minutes(since I started it), otherwise runs well.
Have you tried changing the oil, and putting 4 quarts of oil, and one quart of ATF? I have heard this as a good clean system. You don't want to run long like this, but it will clean things out, and then change oil, and it should be cleaned out.
Thanks I may try that, right now I'm trying to get enough time to pull the pan and clean it and the pick-up screen, maybe replace the oil pump. Doing the ATF thing first sounds like it might help.
I pulled the oil pan, the pickup screen and oil pump were both in good shape. The main bearings were worn and showing the backing material in some places. The upper half of the rod bearings had no bearing material left, not into the steel but well into the copper colored material behind the bearing material. severe wear and taper on the throws also. lots of play in all bearings, probably in excess of 10 thousands. Cant believe it still held 20-25 psi at warm idle with 10-30 oil. Checking for oil passage blockage next.
