I am attempting to install a rebuilt MC in my '83 F100. Per the instructions, I am to reuse my original pushrod & "all other fittings". When I removed (gently) the old pushrod, all that came out was a small broken retaining ring. What pieces go on to the end of the rod? Can I buy them? The dealer was no help. Any tricks to installing the rod? Thanks
The push rod is part of the booster and should not come out. If it did you may need to replace the booster. The Master Cyl. end of the push rod should have a nut to adjust the length. If this came out you may also need to repace the Booster!
Thanks for responding. My truck doesn't have a booster. The rod is attached to the pedal, goes through the firewall directly into the MC. I called BroncoGraveyard.com (where I bought the rebuilt) and they pulled a small retaining clip from a junker and sent it to me. Now I am trying to figure out how it goes on the rod. And how the rod snaps into the MC. I don't want to force it. Anybody have experience with this tiny clip??
Well, I know they are manual brakes! I need to try to remember what I did know - A LOOONG time ago! The push rod is very simular to the power brakes.
The master cy. end of the push rod may have a rounded point that rides in a detent on the plunger in the MC. Or it may have a round plunger on the MC end that inserts on the MC.
The other end attaches to the pedal with the brake light switch.
The pedal will have a pin sticking out the side with a small hole in the side. A spacer goes on first then the endof the push rod has a bushing in it and slips inside the switch and the unit slides on the pin on the pedal. Then another spaces goes on and the clip/retaining pin slides through the hole.
The wire end of the switch should point to the truck seat. I don't remember if the switch has a top side!
Hope this helps. I have a Ford parts dept. print out and will try to find it and send to you!
