[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Feb-02 AT 10:56 AM (EST)]My oil pressure guage does not appear to be working. I have replaced the oil twice using the correct oil wieght and amount, so I know the pressure must be ok. I replaced the oil pressure sending unit, but the guage is still pegged past max. Is there anything else I can check/change?
Hey Blue, more information please. Year? model? Engine? Does the oil pressure (Red) warnimg light illuminate? Is the engine clicking and clanking when it runs?
It's probably the dash indicator but could be a lot of things. Best thing in the short term is to get a mechanical oil pressure indicator and install it where the oil sender unit is located. That will tell you real quickly if it is an engine or an indicator problem.
Big Blue:
Try disconnecting the wire at the sending unit and see if the gauge still reads full scale. If so, you have a short to ground in the signal wire, or a defective gauge.
If the gauge reads minimun scale, then there is something wrong with either the gauge, or the series resistor has been bypassed. In the latter case, you could replace the sending unit with an analog type and have a true gauge. A sending unit from a 92 Mustang 5.0 will work.
Sorry about lack of info. I have a 1990 F250 4X4 w/460 5spd. The Oil pressure indicator is not a light but an eletronic guage. The dealer replaced the sending unit, as I could not find it anywhere after looking at the Haynes manual. I wonder if it might be in the instrument cluster as the one I have replaced the original since this has a tach and tripmeter.
If it is the guage can just it be replaced? I know the aftermarket gauges are more reliable, but I don't want it junking up the dash.
Really sounds like they put the wrong sending unit on. Don't know anything about the 460, but if you look around the oil filter area you should find the sending unit. I would still unhook the wire to the sending unit to see if the gauge reads minimum. If it does, it's probably ok. I woulln't put an aftermarket unit in there, except maybe under the dash as an auxillary.
Carburetor 460's had the oil pressure sender or switch on top of the engine, way back on the passengers side by the firewall. Has a single wire clipped onto the top. I don't know if they moved it to somewhere else for EFI engines.
