Changing Valve Cover Gaskets
Has anyone ever changed their valve cover gaskets by themselves? I have a 98 Explorer 4.0 SOHC and was wanting to do them by myself but looking under the hood it looks like it might be one heck of a job? Any insight on time and skills needed, or tools needed? Thanks,

Changing Valve Cover Gaskets
I've changed the gaskets on a 4.0 OHV. Not too difficult and no special tools needed, just standard socket sets, extensions, etc. Depending on which side I was working on I believe I had to take off the alternator and A/C compressor. Mostly time consuming more than anything else. I assume the SOHC is similar.

Maybe I'm wrong, because I did this job as a part of a head gasket repair, but don't you need to replace the lower intake manifold gasket as well? I recall looking at the valve cover gaskets (1996 4.0 OHV) and thinking that I wished I had the OEM style gaskets b/c they're metal faced and didn't leak a drop in 113000 miles, but they cost like $40 at the ford garage. BTW, I may also be mistaken, but I recall the $40 being PER GASKET!!! Maybe all those jobs just got rolled into one in my memory, though.
