Hello and a Question

Been hanging around on this site for a few months after I got my 2015 250. Great site and it nice to learn things the dealer doesn't tell you. Thanks!
My question is, do varying qualities of diesel effect milage and especially regens. It seems that one place I get fuel from causes regens more often. Others it does not . The pump says minimum cetane is 30ppm . I tried additives and it did not seem to help. I usally drive a 40 minute commute one way everyday. I currently have 12,500 miles on it. Thanks again for the info.

Fuel

The short answer is yes. Use the best fuel you can get. The fuel you should be using is ULSD which 15 PPM(Parts Per Million) of sulfur, it should have min rating of 40 cetane. Try to fill up at station have a high turn over of diesel. What is the biodiesel content for PA?? How often are the regen?

The biggest change to length of regen for me is driving in traffic. This causes my truck to regen often. Also this truck likes work hard and this helps keep the system clean.

I believe Ford recommends a cetane level of 45.

I also seem to remember reading somewhere that Ford recommends a cetane rating of 45, Which is almost impossible to buy at most fuel stops. Hence the need to add some kind of an additive, at least for the cetane increase, and while at it for lubricity and in the winter anti-gel.

But there are hundreds of thousands of these trucks running on the diesel straight from the pump with no additives. So it's more a personal preference.

Increasing the cetane will improve combustion in the cyclinder, which will reduce the amount of soot, which reduces the number of regens.

Different gas station can definitely have different additives in their fuel, any number of which can help you truck run better or worse. Since the Base fuel is pretty much the same across the board, the additives are the major difference. If you notice a fuel source that runs better in your truck, stick with it. Or find an additive you can add.

Short answer is yes, especially place like Illinois.

I try to stay away from bio. You also need to follow a severe duty maint schedule as well.

When local I run fuel from the co-op. Premium with 50 cetane. I have extremely few regens.

I wonder if it's just because I don't monitor regens or what but... I buy at any place that sells diesel from a small mom and pop store with an above ground tank in northern Maine to huge truck stops on major interstates and everywhere in between. I never add anything to my fuel. I've even gone to stations that had B20. By doing all of this, I've NEVER noticed my truck running any different or regening more or less. Not once since I bought it. I'm not discounting what others have posted. Just posting my experience. I guess I'm the exception, not the rule. IDK...

For the last app. 10 years I've run Diesel Kleen grey. I quit doing it app. two months ago and can't tell any diff. in performance and now regens with the 2015.
I'm not saying it can't help I just can't quantify it.

I thought a little bio diesel was a good thing... for lubricity?

Last time I got fuel was at Chevron and it said contains 5% bio. I think. I'll have to go back by there and check.

I'm in an area in Texas that mandates minimum cetane of 48 too.

I also added some Archoil AR6200 fuel treatment (free sample) to this tank.

Didn't really notice a difference. But I don't get to drive the truck enough to really tell either.

Bought it in July and finally rolled 2000 miles last week. And half those miles was towing my 5th wheel.

Bio is not a bad thing in small quantities, imho.

It just is not so friendly to the emissions and tends to have less energy.

Thanks All, I'll look around for higher cetane numbers. Maybe look for a cetane booster as well.

I am like Karl4kat. I have made 3 trips across the Rockies and 2 trips to Florida with the 5er, buying everywhere (no deck tank in my standard bed). I use no additives, and I cannot find any difference in fuel mileage and regens. For the OP, you just might be getting regens when you happen to buy from that one dealer. Just luck of the draw.
