Replacement Plates
One of the plates on my 65 is damaged and I want to replace the plate but I refuse to turn them in for the later model. Appears I have a couple options; Ca DMV now offers the 'personalized', period correct plates, for an additional $40 per year to the annual registration fee's. I am not clear about the other option, I came across a couple commercial license plates where the item description notes the are "DMV Clear". I have an appointment with DMV in a few days and wonder if I purchase the plates can I take them with me and register the 65 under the purchased plates??
Comments, Suggestions appreciated!!
Trucks require commercial plates unless they have a permanent mounted camper or camper shell.
If one of your black plates is damaged (or missing), you'll have to turn it and the undamaged plate in, will be issued new white CA plates
unless you go the 'personalized plate' route.Personalized plate: I know for a fact that S28392 is clear, as I replaced these black plates on my '65 F100 in 1983 with white plates. I installed the plates originally since I bought it new.
'Course, how long they'll be clear...now that I've posted the info on the net...is unknown.
btw: If you belong to Triple A (here's it's the SoCal Auto Club), you don't have to mess with the DMV.
No appointment is required, and if you do have to wait, it's inside on comfy chairs, not outside in long lines, some of the people are unwashed and/or are gang bangers, look like they'd be on the 5 o'clock news.

It is my understanding I had to make an office visit since the truck has not been registered for the past several years. I am scheduled to meet with them the middle of next week but from my recent experience I do not intend registering the truck until I get clarification as to my options, I have scheduled a follow up appointment for final registration.
I am considering selling the truck 65 with the 390 so I did not want to surrender the original plates thinking perhaps buyer may prefer the period correct plates. Further, if I decide to keep the truck I would either go with the used commercial plates; if not an issue, or go with the nice and shinny period correct plate and take the hit for the additional cost for annual registration.
Again, thanks you for the information, very much appreciated!!
