I have a 2001 xl 7700 bifuel rwd truck with 137,000 miles. The engine is toast, and I am trying to figure out what to do next. I am thinking about putting in a regular, non bifuel, 5.4. I have never done an engine swap, but have time to figure it out. I am pretty sure the ecu and wiring is different, and am wondering if buying a vin L ecu with a remanufactured 5.4 would work out. My truck has the 4r100 transmission. Is this doable? I would consider a 4BT instead, but here in Maricopa county AZ they do emissions testing, and don't know if it would be legal. Scrapping the truck is also an option, but I have done a lot of work to it in the past couple years. Anybody know the easiest solution to this p.i.t.a.?
Anything to do with camshaft position has to be fixed, and it's a technical job, and probably requires special tools and a bunch of parts, like the entire chain, tensioner, sprocket set up. Maybe. Or just cam phasers.

Yeah...I understand...Ive done alot of research and I know it could be alot of different things. Probably entire timing kit and then STILL selenoids and vvt...vct...etc. Its just that my engine is locked and I have an opportunity to buy a 5.4l 3v for $500.00. But it is pulling po022 code. timing rertard problem. Could I fix it by doing timing? Not sure what to do?? The previous owner got a new engine. He said this one started right up but would go into Limp Mode at higher RPMS...Also I was wondering if my locked motor may have locked to timing chain slippage (jumping Gears). Is that possible?? I havent opened it up yet to check....THANKS
Swapping in a different motor is going to cause issues. I take it you have a 2 valve motor now, right? If that $500 motor has issues and doesn't match your motor, forget it.
Your motor could be locked due to timing chain issues. Only a tear down will tell.
I've seen a few threads here with people trying to swap different mod motors.
If your truck is a keeper and otherwise sound, consider spending a bit more for are rebuild or waiting until you get an exact match on a used motor.
Yes...It IS an exact match...both Motors are 5.4L 3V ford f 250 super duty...This guy just wants this motor out of his way..so..500 bucks. He showed me the history on the scanner. It was just pulling a P0022 code...also...supposedly... the previous owner already did a complete timing kit job on it about a year ago. I think I better grab this motor..!! Now, Im wondering if I should try to install it myself (tight budget) or pay a shop $1200.00 to install it!! Tks for the reply.. If Im REAL LUCKY maybe it only needs VCT Bank 2 Solenoid replacement!!! What do ya think !!
I want to get into my motor first tho. Ive been told that a timing chain cant lock a motor and also that it can. Im thinking if that chain was "slopping" around in there it may have jumped up and got caught on the cam shaft sprocket and now motor wont turn. I put a Pry Bar and extension pipe on that sucker and tried to turn (both directions) NOTHING..WONT BUDGE...2008 F 250 SUPER DUTY...5.4L 3V...
