NEW SENDING UNIT

I recently bought a 2005 F250 super crew 5.4 fuel level read error!!! no I just bit the bullet and bought the entire fuel pump assembly. after replacing it today. the gauge still read Empty . when I turn the key on it goes a little above empty. should it take some time to get back to reading normal or should I reset something? by the way the old float on the old assembly was completely separated so this had to be the problem.any advice would help

Did you verify power and ground? Grounds always need to be cleaned on older vehicles. On an old school vehicle this would indicate a open, a bad sending unit(yes even a new one) or a bad ground.

First off thanks for the reply. And yes I verified the ground and the power before I replaced it . I had seen people say that "eventually" the gas gauge corrected itself. So I unhooked the battery or an hour and it didn't help. There was about 3/4 tank in it when I replaced it

Sure sounds like an "short" to me. An open would peg it too full. If all fuses are good, power and ground are verified then it points to a faulty sending unit. Do you know if it ever worked?
I have heard of instances where the float got hung up due to a faulty or damaged sending unit or improper installation. Try giving the tank a love tap with a dead blow and see if it comes to life?
