Oil filter on a pivot?

So I changed my oil today and learned a lesson about overtightning an oil filter. While trying to poke a screwdriver through the thing, the whole assembly pivoted like it was on a swivel towards the front of the vehicle. I want to know if this is something that I need to worry about, or if it is made that way for some reason. I was able to pivot it back to the original position but I have never had this happen before on any the other Fords I have had. The vehicle is the Ranger in my Sig. Thanks in advance for any help.

Your 4.0L has a 90 degree filter adapter that has a large bolt through the adapter into the block. The adapter allows a vertical filter orientation. If you loosened the big nut, next time you have the filter removed try tightening the adapter nut. There is an ear on the adapter to let you know when the filter is vertical.

Wouldn't that tend to leak if you can move it by hand?

Thanks for the info on the filter. I will keep an eye out for leaks but so far it is ok. At least I know I didn't breaksomething. I don't want to take it off now as I just got done changing it but I will keep an eye out for leaks and on my oil level. Thanks again for the help.
