Suggestions??

Hello, I am looking to get into the diesel game and out of the F150 game. I like the 6.7's and my budget is tight. I have found a 2011 4 door 4WD Lariat with 176k on it. I'm trying to track down the history of vehicle now but as of now it doesn't seem to have been a work truck or towing for it's daily job. Prob looks more like a "Metro" style and didn't too much "work" The truck is at a dealer that is a few cities away and wouldn't be a problem to get to it.

Before I go any further with it, I want to know what you guys who have experience with diesels think of the mileage. (176k) I feel like it would be fine and it wouldn't be pulling or working hard on a daily basis as of yet but soon to fix that of course. And even then, not a daily or weekly thing.

That's heavier on miles than I would care for...having said that, if the truck is in great shape and you get good reports than who's to say.

The secret to a happy 6.7 is to actually work it. If I'm not towing or hauling with mine I'm usually using my wife's Tacoma or riding my Goldwing.

There is another thread on here where someone talks about their chat with a fleet manager. That fleet manager basically said these 6.7L Fords should go 400K miles and that was with only basic maintenance and nothing else while being worked pretty hard. Most everyone else says their 6.7 isn't happy unless you're working it. I'm also a recent convert from F150 to F350 and I'm glad I did. I also thinks its a balancing game as far as price/worth/condition of vehicle etc. Do you know how the truck was maintained?

Not at the moment. The carfax stats that there are maintenance records. I'm going to call them this morning and ask what has been done, if the recalls have been completed or not. The carfax says there is one I completed recall. Here has been two owners.

If you go to the dealer that has it and ask to see the oasis summary it will show you every visit that truck has had to a ford dealership. If they're nice, they'll print it out for you and you can see every single part that has been replaced.

Mine does well, but I work it or I drive something else.

Mine is not a commuter. that is why it does as well as it does.

get a 12 or 13 preferably, 11 was the first year and they had some kinks with a few things, like the turbos failing prematurely and radiator leaking if i recall, maybe someone else can shed more light on those issues and when exactly they were fixed. I would expect some emissions/exhaust problems to start occurring at higher mileages, but the motor should run a long time if its been maintained properly and you continue to do so.

SultanGris,

I had an early 2011 and had none of those problems in the 145,000 miles that I drove that truck.

To the OP, ANY vehicle with 175,000 miles is going to have some problems, That truck will be on it's 6th set of tires, probably is 2nd maybe 3rd set of brakes, 2nd set of batteries, 2nd or 3rd set of shocks, etc. It probably will have replaced the front hubs/bearings at least once, Serpentine belt, flushed the tranny several times and probably flushed the coolant at least twice.

The point is, expect to spend some money almost monthly on routine maintainence, even if the engine continues to run strong. All the other parts on any vehicle will need some repairs or replacements.

My first thought was the comment of "On A BUDGET". Being on a budget and a 2011, 6.7 diesel, with 170,000 miles on it does not sound like a good match to me.

Even a minor repair on these trucks don't come cheap or inexpensive.

My suggestion would be to give it some very serious thought thinking before going forward.

Fair enough. I thought i read a lot of posts about those type issues back in the day when they first came out, been a while though, maybe im not remembering clearly. At any rate they certainly didnt affect every one of them, just seemed a little more common than average and Im pretty sure they changed the turbo design in later model years because of it. Sometimes youll have major issues before 1000 miles and other times you have none all the way to 300,000. Its hard to say for sure, so many factors.

One never knows, I turned 236K this last week and have had some stuff go bad. Minor, maybe. It's usually $700 every time to the dealer. The radiator issue was the one that chapped my behind. Other than that 2nd set of brakes, vacuum pump, fourth set of tires, EGR cooler, 2nd set of shocks, front control arm, and have yet to replace the batteries. The batteries will probably show their age this coming winter. The one thing that has surprised me is that the ball joints are still original. All in all, I can't really complain,
