Hello,
I now have a total of 3 1979 F150's. Still the newest truck I have ever owned. I opened the hood and saw this attached to the driver side inner fender wheel. Appears the spedo cable attaches to it and a whole bunch of wires. Does anyone know what it is? I would like to clean the wires up and maybe remove from the truck if I can without messing something up with the function of the truck.
Old perfect circle/dana cruise control. You can just get a speedo cable and go straight to your speedo from transmission. Ford started using the finger tip speed control on cars in 1968 for some models I think Lincoln was the last hold out till 1971. Aftermarket and GM continued with the pc/dana for quite awhile.
I thought that Ford's anti-corrosion coating was designed to emanate from various orifices at around 25,000 miles cuz on a GM product it's 500 miles. On a Dodge it's as soon as it rolls off the lot.
The spedo cable that comes from the dash goes to the box shown and the other cable goes from the box to the T-case. I just want to clean up the wires and tie them out of the way. I do have another cab and frame that I could take the spedo cable from the dash straight to the T-case if needed. But if the spedo still works, I am leaving it alone. It has a Grant GT steering wheel in it now so I assume the cruise control buttons are long gone anyways.
As for the oil leak, it is from the previous owner where he had the power steering pump blow the cover off a few times and spread Type F fluid all over the place. I simply swapped in an extra pump I had, primed the system, and everything works fine. I need a few cans of engine degreaser to get rid of all that crap. Bought the truck for $1000. It is a good running 4x4 that most everything works and the body isn't horrible so it will make a great hunting truck. I actually bought the truck because i wanted the wheels for my good truck.
