I sold my 7.3l Excursion last summer, regret selling it. It was 2wd and did not work out for us where we live, snow country. Still regret selling it though. Anyway, with our forth kid on the way, we need a bigger vehicle so a new to me Ex is back in my thoughts.
I would not mind having another 7.3l Ex but can't justify the cost vs fuel cost savings. On a budget too. I'm seeing a few nice, low mile 5.4l Ex's for sale for reasonable prices. I'm a little leery of a 5.4l pulling around a 7000 lb truck. We will not tow much with it, maybe a car trailer with my classic car occasionally. Primarily a grocery geter and road trip vehicle for the family.
What are your thoughts on a 5.4l for my intended use? Also, we live at 9000' so it will be going up and down hills at highway speeds on a regular basis.
What gear ratio does it have in the axles? Your going to be turning some RPM climbing those hills so I would say a 4.30 ratio on stock size tires should help it some.
Humm 5.4 exursion, lets put it this way you will be happier with the v10 and 4.30. 5.4 struggles alot, i should know I own one and mines 2wd with 3.73 and the highest elevation i went to was at 7000' and pulling my camping trailer was no fun at all, with grades all the way to 8-10% she was screaming in first gear. the upside of that trip i did manage to get 10mpg hand calculated with most being high way.
As a daily driver it will do just fine and as far as what you want to pull it will do fine as well, it is not a diesel so let it downshift when it needs to and don't be afraid of 5000 rpm from time to time when pulling, it can run like that all day long....
I looked at this one yesterday 2004 Ford Excursion For sale in Denver, CO I was not able to drive it as I had all of the kids with me. I may go back tomorrow and look again and drive it. It is missing one of the factory alloys, spare is on the right front, interiors is nice, low miles. Needs tires.
I would prefer a V10, but would like low miles and as new as I can afford. Trying to keep it under $10k. I see a lot of beat down Ex's on Craigs List for cheap, but I really do not want something that is beat.

I like it too, not the usual Excursion color I see. And it is very clean inside and out. The only issue I see is the missing factory alloy. Not a deal breaker though if everything else on the truck checks out to my satisfaction.
I see you have performed a few mods on your 5.4. Were they worth the effort and expense?

Thanks for the input. I will see if I can figure out what the gear ratio is when I look at it this week. 4.30 would certainly be preferred with the small engine.

Yes they were, the biggest was the change to 4:30 gears, my 5.4 spends almost its entire time pulling our fifth wheel. The next best was the SPD Y-pipe. I think for the little your going to pull I wouldn't waste your money on a gear swap, to do both axles your looking at $2000..
Learned something new today, have never seen a 5.4 4x4. Agree with the color combo also, looks nice!
Yup, there are a few of them floating around. There is one on Craigs List in Denver with over 300k miles on it! I do not want that one, but it adds a little confidence to see a 5.4 dragging one of these beasts around for a bunch of miles.
