I have my '98 5.4 Expy (80k miles) in remote Mexico and just brought back new Bosch platinum plugs from the States. Then I read several messages on this board saying the Bosch Platinum +4 is the only way to go if one is going to the trouble to change the plugs.
Should I eat the cost of the plugs I already bought and have someone bring me some +4s from the States? Will they make that much of a performance difference compared to the single platinums and will they pay for themselves in fuel savings?
I had a set of +4's in my 91 Explorer and the insulator was cracked and chunks missing in two of them when I was checking them after 30K. They are nice, but where did the chuncks of insulator go?
Good double plats from motorcraft are all you need.
Ive seen a lot of Ford trucks go the 100000 miles on a set of the double platinum Motorcraft plugs and I believe in them. They are well designed to go the distance.
I went 100K miles on the original Motorcraft plugs with no hint of any decrease of performance or mileage. I only changed them on a matter of principle... I prefer preventitive maintenance to waiting until something breaks since I'm often in very remote areas.
Bosch plugs and Fords do not work well together. It took me 2 sets of plugs and wires and losing one cylinder at a time to convince me and it now has Motorcraft back in with no problems at all!
