I'm in the process of removing my fuel tank and I'm having some difficulty.
I have removed th straps and the fuel filler neck. I have disconnected the sending unit connectors and removed the fuel lines. My tank is stuck. I plan on removing the pickup bed anyway so I'm not really trying to solution it right now, but has anyone ever seen this:
There is a rod that has a clip holding the rubber fuel lines on one end, and at the other end its bolted to the same bolt that holds the rock guard (or heat shield, whatever it is)
What is the purpose of this rod?
All the research I did before removing the tank made no mention of this, and the reason its stuck is the nut n the bottom spins with the bolt. I cannot access the top side of the bolts either. I know Ill be better able to reach once the bed is removed, but Im just curious what this is for.
This is the other nut that just spins with the bolt:
I had to remove the straps from the side that had the short bolt.
I posted in the 73-79 forum but just in case it matters. its a 78 F150. duel tanks, but I'm working on the mid tank. the top pictures does not show very well but I remove one nut that held the heat sheild in place. The nut that still in place is one of two preventing me from dropping the tank.
I got her out:
Now you can see what I was talking about a little better. It was causing the lip of the fuel tank to be "stuck". I found after i reached across the top of the fuel tank and muscled the bottom hose from the fuel filler and return hose, I was able to slide the entire fuel tank towards the back of the truck then twist the whole tank out. It was only half full so It was not heavy.
Heres the tank:
...and the other end of the rod that was helping to bind the tank:
I read somewhere that you have to remove the bed to get the rear fuel tank out. I just verified that you do NOT have to remove the bed to get the rear fuel tank out. It a PITA if your working solo but its done. It is definitely easier if you loosen the filler neck from the body of the bed, and loosen the rear support on the RH exhaust. Obviously you also have to remove the straps but the tank can then maneuvered down from the passenger side which gives better access to loosen the sending unit wires and fuel line. the clamps on the filler neck hose were impossible to reach with the tank all the way in because the flat head side was facing the bottom of the bed on my truck. After getting the passenger side down I was able to twist the rubber filler neck to access the clamp. The rest was a piece of cake.
