1972 Ranger XLT - Thoughts?

Just purchased from WA. Bringing it down to NE this week.

I am fairly new to this generation of Ford Trucks, so please let me know what your thoughts are.

Definitely not a showroom truck, but the body looks fairly straight.
360 with the 4 Speed - 116k miles
4x4
Power Brakes
Rust on Lower Front Fender

What would be the first projects you tackle with this vehicle?
What would you change/restore?
Let me know if there is anything you dislike about the truck.

Thank you.

The first thing is, I'd do is add a spare tire. Then would be changing all fluids & hoses. Pull all four drums and check brakes look for any leaking wheel cyl. Repack all wheel bearing. Check all 3 rubber flex brake lines for any cracking and replace them if old & hard. Check & lube front driveline u-joint's. Do a compression test before a full tune-up

Just so you'll have something to do for starters!

Orich,
I really appreciate the input. I think you nailed it. Once those items are taken care of I will have a clean slate to work from.

How difficult is it to add power steering?

Replace steering column;
find, install brackets for steering pump;
find, install correct steering gear.
As to what I would change. If you are "high boy" fan, then leave it. But I like the stock stance of the 4x4 bumps with the factory look tires/wheels. But that is me. You may have more practical uses for the elevated ride, wide tires, etc.
Oh, by the way, nice looking truck.

After you have the basic safety and maintenance complete, take a read through the tech compilation stickied at the top of the board. The updated list starts near the end on page 2, here is a LINK

I would start by driving it for a while and letting it tell you what it wants or needs. After that I would do headlight relays, the 3G alternator upgrade, AC, and then PS.
Main thing is to enjoy.

Adding P/S is not just a add on parts, but cutting the mid shaft & possibly the drag link and re-welding them back together & notching the frame.

I still have my truck with manual steering.
I try to keep my truck moving when turning while parking so that's the only time,
I miss not having P/S. But hey it saves me money by not needing to go to the GYM as it's a good workout for old farts.

I just joined, having just gotten my '72 last month. I think it looks great the way it is. I seem to be in the minority, I'm a keep it original type of owner.

There isn't one.
F100/250 4WD's were not available with P/S until 1973 and thru 1977 (F250), there are two different types of Power Assist P/S. The parts do not interchange!

F250 4WD:

Garrison Power Assist P/S: 1973; 1974 before serial number T80,001.

Bendix Power Assist P/S: 1974 from serial number T80,001; 1975/76; 1977 before serial number Y20,001.

All the parts are obsolete for both types of Power Assist, some are available NOS, but be prepared for "sticker shock."

Mea culpa numbers. Was thinking f100 2wd. Forgot about the issue with 4wd.

2x with Gembone. Learn its personality......Nice stance.

In addition to the headlight relays, I like the option of extra lighting so adding driving lights would be on my list.

FYIs...
- The tie downs are retrofitted. New replacements are about $40... each!

- The truck has a "contour" rear bumper. OEM brackets are relatively hard to find.

- Side view mirrors have been retrofitted.

2X Greg.

Welcome to FTE!
Also check the cab mounts. Metal fronts and rubber front and rear. Back of the cab looks low.

Nice truck! Let me know when you get it here, depending on where you are in Nebraska, I might be able to lend a hand!

Can this Tailgate Trim be repaired / straightened out?
The 70-72 Ranger Tailgates seem to be extremely hard to find.

Thanks,
Trever

I have the same panel, and mine is a little beat up also I'm going to try and straighten it out, I think you just have to be very gentle.
