It will stutter really back throwing me around in the truck a lot. Seems to do it more when cold. I recently replaced headgasket and all other gaskets on the way, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, and alternator. It ran just fine after all of this for about atwo months. Then one day I started it up to go to work and the thing stuttered the whole way there. I have tried blocking the EGR valve also with no luck. My next idea would be the coil. And when it stutters, the tach jumps around like crazy, I mean the tach jumps, but the motor isnt really revving what the tach shows when it jumps around. I have also cleaned all connections and inside the distributor. Someone has to have an idea whats wrong........
Well, the tach jumps at the same time it stutters everytime, so it almost has to be something electrical. If something were wrong with the injectors, the tach wouldnt jump like it does. Unless one is shorting out and backfeeding into the tach.
ah yes... definetley ignition related. my '87 Econoline used to do this on the highway. you may want to try msking sure your spark plugs are propertly gapped. if that checks out, check the resistance of the coil. I dont have the specs on me, but If you have another EEC-4 Ford vehicle in the family, you can always just swap the ignition coil and do a test run and see if it checks out good. the coil ended up being the problem in my case.
there is no sure-fire way of testing an ignition module, but that also can be going, although normally those fail abruptly once the engine starts to warmup.
yeah i would deffinitly think it would be spark. The tach is reading directly from the coil so its probably the coil, wires, or spark. Could be ignition module?? i'm not even sure if it has one...
hey my 92 is doing the same thing after a tune up it ran ok but the studder was still there does it do it all the time mine does it bad on a cold morning but after it warms it stops till it was to shake the hell out of the truck again.
Ok, well this morning I replaced the coil which did not help at all. So on to the next thing, the ignition module. Now the truck runs perfect again after I replaced it. Both the coil and the ignition module can be found at Napa.
