Does anyone know how the "Midwest" got that designation? I have always wondered this. I was raised in the geographical center of the nation and always wondered how something 800 miles east could still be considered west.
During colonial times, when there were only 13 states clustered along the east coast, even moving to Ohio territory was considered moving west, because it was a wilderness and you had to be a pioneer.
Later on, when the far west opened up, they had to come up with a different designation for what had been just "the west." Thus, "midwest" was born.
I am curious as to how I live in the midwest and can look out my window and see mountains. This is odd because its not really the northwest, the midwest. the farwest. Just Montana.
