I recently have been looking for headers for my 79 F150 4X4, and I need to get headers that are emissions legal, cause Im in Ca. I havent had much luck yet, but I was wondering if headers from a 351 C would work on a 351M with little to no modification. So will it, because that would help me to find some emissions legal ones since there are a few made for the 351C. Im not to worried about them fitting correctly in the truck though, cause that can be fixed with a little manuvering and work, I hope. Well anyways, thanks for the help!
since when are 351M headers for a 79 150 hard to find? there are no headers available for a C in an F series that i am aware of, and getting them to fit wouldn't be easy. they would want to be where the floor is.
grclark351- they are hard to find if you need to get ones that are emissions legal for California. Weve got the stricktest laws about emissions here, and only a few companys make ones that are 50 state legal, but the ones Ive found are only for 1980 and up. What if I got shorty headers that didnt go back very far then had a pipe made with a bend in it to go to the headers from the cat? Couldnt that work? Thanks for the info guys!
yes, i see. i didn't think it would be such a hard to find but the major manufacturers are all "not for sale or use on pollution controlled vehicles" i thought they were all trying to get CARB #'s for thier products? i went over to the other side and asked the Q, check out the reply and continue the thread further if you like? http://www.network54.com/Hide/Forum/...eid=1059945608
i am surprised that i didn't find a set CARB approved in less than two minutes! what requirements do you need to satisfy the inspector? air tube compatable? are long tubes strictly out, or do they have to have a CARB # to make everybody feel good?
grclark351- hey thanks for the site, thats kind of what Ive been hearing about a lot of after-market equipment, it can pass the sniffer test fine, but if something looks out of place, you wont pass. Im going to have to talk to my mechanic and smog guy to see what they say. I did find some headers though, but they are for a f250 with the same engine. I dont know if the link will work or not but they are on http://www.thorleyheaders.com/ford_headers.html
You wouldnt happen to know if they would work on a f150 would you? I guess they need to have some fitting for some type of sensor or something and they need to have the CARB number and be EPA approved. Just one more of the great laws that we have in this wonderful state called California! Only 5 more years till im exempt! Thanks gclark351 for the info and site!
F250 should fit the same i would think? and i can't think of any special fittings the headers would need, the AIR tubes are built into the heads. prolly need dual catalytic converters though? worst case scenario; install the headers the way you want them, then put the manifolds on for testing with a short piece of pipe that connects the manifolds to the collector reducers. kind of an adapter pipe. how often do you have to test?
