The very best thing to do is go down to your local stereo shop or call Crutchfield and get yourself a wire harness adapter that will plug into the factory plug in the dash. You can connect all the harness wires to the stereo and then just walk out and plug the harness into your truck, test it, install it in the dash if it works and your done. If your building a serious system don't even use the stock harness for anything. You will want bigger wires running to your speakers, a bigger power wire for your stereo. If you ever sell it you can remove all your good stuff and plug the old stuff right back in.
myabe, i should've been more specific. i'm trying to install a 03' stock stereo in my 91' f-150. I have a harness for my truck but i don't know which wires go where from the newer model. i need to know what the color code is for the 03' model to match it up.
in case you are wondering, my uncle works for a waste management company that picks up loads from Visteon. For some reason they were dumping a bunch of stock radios (probably for changeover) and he gave me one.
i got the radio to work but it's not right. i've got some wires crossed and i don't know where. I've got the speaker wires figured out but the memory, dimmer, ground etc... is giving me problems.
Just purchase the harness like I said for your truck from Crutchfield. Once you get it Crutchfield will give you tech help for free. If you could go to the junk yard and cut the stereo plug with a few inches of wires from a truck with that year of stereo you could call Crutchfield and just ask what every wire does, then connect the harness wires to the correct wires on the plug you cut out. If that won't work for you then you will have to go down to the Ford dealer and ask them to print you off a wire diagram of that type of stereos plug connection and one for your truck, read and figure out for yourself.
