Dana 60 Swap

I am picking up a dana 60 out of a 91 f350 to toss under my 87 f250. What parts do I need to do the swap correctly? By way of sway bars, tie rods, pitman, idler, and anything else you can think of. Also what will remain the same? My truck doesn't have a lift on it so no hassles there. Also the axles only have 3.73 gears and they are going under my diesel. I am looking to put a stronger gear ratio in and was wondering if I should just go with 4.10's or would I be able to fit 4.88's or 5.38's? Firs time doing a swap like this and I just want to know all that I can before I start taking things apart and run into problems. And no I am not planning on using the springs or blocks.

You're looking for 4.11 reverse cut or 4.88/5.38 reverse cut thick gears

That is a good axle for beating on. How ever for daily driving and maintenance the ball joint is better suited.

I'm going to be following this. I too have an '87 that I just put new front springs in. Now the camber is way off. All the young guys at work are telling me to put in a 60 with kingpins.

Ive been looking for a kingpin for a long time, they are stronger and last a lot longer than balljoints. And the axle is going under an old diesel that rides like a tank down the smoothest road in Michigan. Unfortunately for know shes not going to be a daily so I want as strong as I can, normally toss 4000 in the bed and haul it to the scrap yard. She actually drives better with weight in the bed than without the weight. And I was wondering how big of gear ratios I can fit, cause I have 4.10's now and don't want to downgrade to 3.73's. I actually want to put in a little lower gear ratio and was thinking 4.56's, 4.88's, and probably redicious but potentially 5.38's. Would all of these ratio's fit or can I only go as big as 4.56's.

to go with a lower gear than the current 4.10 you will need a different carrier if i remember correctly, unless you can find a set of gears that will fit your carrier. those gears back then were very expensive to find.

these days thick cut gears are the same price, around $300.

but then you will also have to find a set of gears for the rear carrier and they go for around hte same price, $300

You will need....
STOCK F350 pitman arm(the lift one will do you no good)
STOCK F350 front leaf springs(Your F250 ones will do you no good)
STOCKF350 front driveshaft(and front yoke from F350 t-case)
STOCK F350 steering linkage
Drivers side U-bolt plate an new U-bolts
Stock Track bar and mount

Next up... Who put 3.73s in? They were never offered in there trucks. Just 4.10 and 3.55. What size tire do you plan on running and what do you use the truck for?

I use the truck for whatever I need to, and I was kinda thinking I would need all the stock parts off a f350. and Im jut going off what P.O. told me, havent had a chance to check the exact gear ratio. And my stock f250 front springs won't work? I have a set of f350 front springs, or should I just look for a set of superduty (pre-97) front springs?

Years ago I had a f350 ball joint Dana 60 that I beat the day lights out of 4x4ing and eventually blew the 351 before any front end problems lol.

Having said that the majority of people say the same as you that the kingpin is tougher

No F250 springs have a 36500b weight rating due to how they have to move with the TTB.

F350 springs have a 2200lb rating.

If you use F250 sings with a solid axle it will ride like it has NO suspension

Also F-superduty springs would give you an automatic 6" of lift and give a harsh ride in a pickup since the F-superduty were rated at 15,000 and F350s were rated at 9200lbs
